How do you apply to be a marshall?

Hello all. First post and a question.

I ran this year for the first time and can honestly say I loved every second of the event. I will apply next year but was also wondering how do they find all the marshalls. If I don't get in I would love to play a part in the day and wondered if anyone knows how you go about becoming a London Marathon marshall?

Hi Simon,
As far as I know, most of the marshalls come from running clubs in and around London.
If you are a member of a club, they may also know, other than that,I would ring the FLM office direct.
Good luck

Not just running clubs.

There was a chap on here a few weeks ago who organised the marshalls from his rugby club.

If you trawl back, you should find the relevant thread.

Am fairly certain it was called something obvious.

Point is FLM involves peoples from all sports as their marshalls. You will just have to hunt around.

You need to find N(s)icko, he marshalled this year

If you are a Marshall you get 6 guaranteed places for the following year... not a bad incentive.

If every marshall was given 6 guaranteed places there wouldn't be room for anyone else to run.

I'm sure I heard somewhere it was 6 places - must be wrong but I am sure that there is an incentive for doing it in terms of entry for the following year.

maybe running clubs get a certain number of entries for the following year but i'm not sure i'd want 6 entries - if i couldn't get other to run it would i have to go around six times!

Our club supplied 100 marshalls and we got 20 guaranteed places as a result.

so, if you belong to a club which hasn't marshalled before, then who in the club needs to apply for the club to supply marsalls - the big cheese or anyone belonging to the club?

I marshalled this year but nothing was said about getting a guaranteed place. I think that info is wrong. Running clubs do get places allocated but as far as I know this isn't linked to marshalling.

I enjoyed marshalling, and got a very nice teeshirt and medal too.

It's down to the club how the places are distributed.

Ours are drawn out of a hat for those with rejections with preference going to those who helped on our drink station.
