Yep the water station was a lady and a bit later on 2 kids handing gels straight out of the boxes.  Wasnt very well signposted at all and wasnt even clear it wasnt just some random people handing out sweets.

I think they struggled to man the drinks stations, one of my mates did the one at Gorse Hill and I passed on the info for volunteers to the junior section of Sale FC who manned another one in Urmston, so they were only recruited a week or so before the race

I think signage is an issue but will be interfered with regardless of how close to the race it is put up

The etiquette of handing out drinks was explained to those manning the stations but as my mate said, some people were just helping themselves and the reintroduction of bottles meant "popping" a large number of caps on the bottles prior to handing out

That said he was in London for the weekend and witnessed some of their prep and said it was on a different planet

There are always lessons to be learnt, make sure you fill in the post-race questionnaire

Thanks WJH! I dedicated 4 months of my life to that one race! I gave up drinking, i practically gave up socialising! Damn right i'm going to get a little blubbery when it goes to plan!  I didn't notice the gel station either, but i did hear stories in the pub afterwards of people reaching out to grab a gel and the woman turning her back to get more at precisely the wrong time. They weren't complaining though as they still PB'd!

Carterusm - Thanks! It's not the course, it's more the distance. I consider myself to be rather inexperienced when it comes to marathons so was taking a lot of advice from peers and the general response i was getting was that most runners slow in the second half of a marathon and i should expect to lose 1-2 minutes. I'd come to expect that would happen, regardless of how i was feeling.

Animal Magic - I can't recommend a running club highly enough. If you really want to see big improvements in your performance i can't think of a better way to go about it. I hope you get involved and good luck!

Saint Jason - We lost one of our best female runners to you guys a couple years back. Katie White. I saw her marshalling around 7.5 miles at the marathon. I'm sure it's Sale she went to.

Still trying to find the time to read back through everyones race reports, will get to it as soon as possible!

Going to try a steady run tonight but my quads are still pretty sore.

I thought the water stations were well manned, and the only problems I experienced were people running across in front of me.  Happened at the very first one, and I could so easily have tripped up which could have spelled the end of my marathon.  I shudder at the thought.  The fact they opened the bottles for us was great, and so much better than cups of water which I can never handle!

did anybody see the myprotein recovery drinks as I never found them?

or am I imagining that there was even such a thing on offer?

Pete, it seemed to me they were at the water station. If i recall i saw someone handing out water and then i saw someone stood behind them holding a yellow bottle. I took the yellow bottle, but i dont know what was in it - i dread to think, but it tasted ok, must have been the myprotein drink. Again not well signposted. 

I think the water stations, gel stations and isotonic stations need a warning approx 100m before the station, as once you are upon it, you miss it. Thank would be my advice for 2016.

JJ they did have 100m warning signs (and 400m warning signs). It might just have been a bit too crowded around you to see them.

I never saw the recovery drinks station either. That said, that nor the gel bothered me too much (I took a gel at 8, 12, 16 and 21 miles). Another one could have been beneficial especially if I was to have missed out on sub 3:15 so in any case, irrelevant for me personally.

I thought that the opening of the water bottles by the marshals was excellent though.

Hope everyone is just about recovered now!

Nick - I did   It was a little bit confusing to be honest.  I got there early, spoke to one guy who was collecting money and told him it was my first time and who did i need to see etc but he said the bloke i needed to see wasn't around.  Then next minute we were all running off towards Sale water park. 

We then all gathered round and he pointed out the routes for A,B and C groups (i had no idea what group i was meant to be in) and off everyone went.  I asked a couple of blokes who were around me which group i should run with and they said B which they were in so i just stuck with them.  We ran the first few k really easily and everyone else ran off into the distance.  Then at some point we decided to speed up, ran about 3-4k at tempo then a couple easy then a couple hard.

So it was good to go for a run with other people but it was confusing what exactly we were meant to be doing as a group.  I found that with Altrincham though even on track sessions.  I think its just a case of getting used to the different sessions and just cracking on with it each week.

Jason - I spoke to one bloke (Gary??) who was waiting for you but i didn't see him again (or yourself) but sure we will see each other one week as I'm sure ill be back.  Ended up running with two guys called Craig and i think the other was Martin?

JJ - it goes 2 ways, either it's a one off or you fancy another as there are 1 or more things you could do differently and you certainly learn from each race you do. Will see you on the streets of Timperley at some stage


Not sure £8 off will tempt me to pay early and I'm another one who works their runs around the footie fixtures although given it starts and finishes from OT I should be OK

Got a 7.5 and 9.5 mile run in last week and am now going to go back to 4 runs this week starting off with 8 or 9 tonite

Haven't seen any Autumn HM I fancy as Macc/Warrington in September may come too soo after the summer holidays

I think I've looked at Abersoch before might have been the 10K, I think you end up on the beach and the shortest route to the finish line is hurdling the wave breakers!

It's a Saturday race though, which might work, I'm going to wait for mid-June when the footie fixtures come out and then pick a race that fits around those, maybe 2 if there are suitable candidates between September and the end of the year

Macc and Warrington are around the same time as Abersoch

Many of those signs were pretty small... on laminated A3 sheets.   Something they need to improve.

AM - sorry not read here for a week. Glad you got down to the club and don't worry about being confused. I didn't know what I was doing either and stopped at one point as I couldn't remember if the B group were continuing to the motorway bridge!

As you get more familiar with faces you will know where you should be within the groups on tempo runs.

I've been going down there off and on since 2008 and I still don't know where I am running half the time .

The tempo sessions are a bit hit and miss tbh. I've always thought that about them. There really ought to be group leaders who you run with and who lead the session.. calling out when the tempo begins and ends etc.

Tonight will be a bit more structured as it's efforts on Turn Moss fields. So we all jog out there and then the session is a bit like a track session so we all go off in the respective groups.
