Liz, it's my first marathon too. I want to get round in one piece and be able to walk up the stairs to bed after.

This will be my first marathon. I notice from the website that they have 'lucizade' at some of the drink stations. Are these going to be marked on the course?

Is it really necessary to take on anything other than a few mouthfuls of water? I run my weekly long runs (17.5 miles) without anything at all. I don't want to risk any GI problems.

SR, everyone is different but there is no way I would try and run a marathon with just water.  I used to just take 1 gel for a half marathon but my friend (who is an elite runner) had a word and said that I needed to take much more.  I took 3 on my last HM and it really helped and I didnt feel as wiped out at the end.

I will be taking gels and have someone in the crowd carrying flat coke for me (runners dont usually use coke, its a triathlon thing and it works for me).

If you think you need gels then start getting used to them.  You need to find what  and which ones works and which dont.  Gels can have a bad effect....I had to stop 7 times during the run at ironman Switzerland for 'comfort breaks'

Liz: Sorry about not getting back sooner, been a crazy couple of weeks. Thanks for your vote and I got a place in Paris. so thanks again. Going to be my first time too and I've got a thread going on under Asics 26.2: Craig. Got support from Sam Murphy who is adapting the 4:30 plan if you want to have a look. I want to get round without my legs falling off, but in the quickest time possible without that happening.

Surrey: The MK website has a map of lucazaide stops. Think there is three in all.

PipG,

Will try and practice with the Lucizade then. As a matter of interest what did runners do in the olden days when there weren't any of this energy drinks or gels around?

My dad who was a runner in the olden days was fuelled by kendal mint cake and cups of tea lol - oh and he ran in a vest and shorts in the middle of winter - grim, I'm way too nesh for that.

I did a marathon in Lucca, Italy a couple of years back. They didn't hand out sports drinks, just saline solution (grim) to replenish lost salt, and cherry pie slices - nice but messy on the run!

They are also going to hand out high five energy gels at miles 18 and 23 I think. Its a good idea to practice with these on long runs before the event.

When you get to 23 miles there is every chance you'll take whatever they hand you if you're told it'll help! Some people find that the High Five gels don't go down too well so best to trial them before the big day. www.superfit.com do a good sample pack or evans cycles are pretty cheap for a box too.

High5 gels are certainly better than most on the market.

The banana one gets a big thumbs up from me.
