pain in hip muscle and gluteals...

i am having problems with my right gluteal muscle, hip, and lower back. it used to only start hurting after about 1hr 45min, but now i can feel it even after 20min running. it doesn't hurt before running, so i need to go running to see whether or not it still hurts...

i did silverstone in 1hr 50min, but i was in quite a lot of pain for most of the race. has anybody else had pain in that area, and what have you done to get better? FLM only 5 weeks away, and i am getting a bit panicky... the longest run i have done so far is 15miles, but i was in agony for the last 2miles. any tips??

I too get pain in my outer hip and glutes after running for 1hr 45.Wondered if it was something to do with one side of your body striking the ground heavier than the other especially when you get tired, haven't found a cure but doing a bit of long stride walking during silverstone helped ease it off a bit.

I would definitely get it looked at by a specialiast. (Physio/osteo).
Which range of leg motion does it affect?

Reason I ask is that too occasioanlly have pain in my left hip. It affects me when I raise the leg up during the running stride. I've been having it massaged and regularly stretch my glutes and hip muscles. It affects me at 90 minutes but so far I am able to live with it. I'll see how it goes when I do my 20 mile run.

Do you over-pronate when you run? Your running motion may be causing this. Check to see if a change in your running shoes makes a difference. That's all I can think of.

thanks for the advice. i only started running in cotober last year, so am not quite sure whether or not i overpronate. i will buy some new shoes though, and will go to a specialist shop, they should be able to tell. when i got my first running shoes there, they thought i was a neutral runner, but maybe i am not, and that's causing the problem. it's definitely to do with the impact that running has; i can cycle for 2 1/2 hours and don't get any problems.
i went to a physio, but because the muscles only start hurting after a while, i think it was difficult to assess what was the problem. she said i should do some exercises to build up the muscles.
the pain affects the whole leg motion (i think). when it starts hurting, it's just a dull pain throughout the right hip.

ok, well if you only started running recently, then (and I'm no expert here!) it's most likely to be either your running shoes or the fact that you don't have full flexibility in your hip movement. If it is the latter I would suggest you get a physio or masseur (or partner come to that) to help you stretch your hips. Lie on your back and tuck your leg into your chest... actually, better not describe it. Check out the forums for streching exercises or go to your gym for advice. Hopefully that should fix it. And build your running mileage up gradually...

Just come back from a 2 hour run, and no hip pain. Only the chafing in my inner legs caused by forgetting to apply vaseline!!!

I forgot to mention one other point, and some would say the most important point. If you're in agony, then stop running. Pain very rarely goes away, and is usually the forerunner to a more serious injury.

thanks. the physio said to me that i am very flexible (which apparently is why my hips klick sometimes. that doesn't bother me though, since it isn't painful!). so that leaves the shoes...
i know i should be building up mileage gradually, and i thought i had done this ok. i guess sometimes injuries just happen. will try and be careful in the next couple of weeks. am a but worried though. haven't done a longer run than 15 miles, and was walking suring the last couple of those 15miles, sicne the hip hurt so much.
but i agree with you, pain rarely goes away, and it's probably better to be careful.
