Got a sore throat and dry tickly cough. Trying all sorts to get rid of it. Not run since sunday as felt a bit rough / tired.

Going to test the waters this weekend with a couple of short runs - no more than an hour or so. Then just a couple of short jogs next week. I'm a charity runner and training has been riddled with knee injuries, and other niggles and now this! I can't believe some kind soul has given me this bug now, of all times.

What do I do?

(oh and I am scared to death, and was howling at the 'are you getting emotional yet' thread last night!!

Take plenty of vitamin C and calm down!! You are feeling rough/tired due to all the hard training, hence the need to taper and recover....try to relax, get strong and look foward to an amazing day...good luck, Amanda

It's all so close now, and speaking as someone who has taken a couple of weeks to fully get over a 'cold' I really wouldn't chance anything this weekend. You said you've had injuries as well, let your body rest, and do a couple of miles towards the end of next week. You really need to take care, and don't risk putting your body under any more stress right now. Eat and drink lots and you'll have more chance of fighting off any infection. I know it's hard not to try, but it could cost you dear, and running a marathon when you're under the weather is incredibly hard and dangerous. Wrap up, and enjoy a few days rest.......your body will thank you, and good luck for the FLM.

thanks Amanda!
I guess I am getting a bit over wrought about it all. Just thinking about it makes me feel quite teary! Good grief what am I like...

Don't feel like I have done much hard training thanks to injury time, but I know I have done more than some, and even if it takes me all day - I will do it.

All the best to you too :-)

Join the club, I've been taking all sorts since last sunday trying to clear a cold and sore throat. Don't worry, we still have time on our side at the moment. Better this week than next!!

Go-slow, it is a huge emotional roller coaster ride training for FLM...the nearer the big day the worse the ride becomes!

As for the day itself, well it's just a most awesome experience, words fail me to be honest. It is very, very emotional and can be hard to keep the tears in check...so many amazing supporters trying so hard to help you and making you feel the most fantastic, special person on the planet...despite the pain and tiredness when you cross the line you will feel invincible...this huge target you have set yourself has been achieved (and you WILL finish)...enjoy it...Amanda

Thanks all of you. Think I will go and get a bucket load of vit c and zinc on my way home tonight.

I know you are all right when you say take it easy. I am trying, but it makes me feel very uneasy and guilty! I KNOW that this weekend won't make a great deal of difference, but try telling my brain that!

I am also ever mindful of the fact that I haven't managed huge long distance runs - my longest being 14 miles - but I have done a few of them.. So, it is too late for me to worry about that.. but the mind is a cruel thing, it is playing all sorts of tricks on me.

Thanks to you all, I greatly appreciate this. See you all next week, and good luck.

I know just how you feel Go Slow. I've had a streaming cold since Monday and I'm so lethargic and unwell it feels like I've not done any training at all! I managed 4 miles on Wednesday and will try 8 very easy tomorrow. I think for us first timers that, even if we didn't have these last minute colds, we'd be sweating it by now anyway! The only thing to do is try not to stress out too much, rest and binge on vit C, fresh fruit and veg, and keep away from anymore bugs!

Good luck everyone - and good health!

SARS seems quite popular at the moment.

Half the colleagues in my office have colds/flu so I'm touching a lot of wood at the moment!

At least having a cold now would be preferable to acquiring one this time next week!

Don't panic !

This'll sound a bit trite, but maybe better to have this prob now than, say, this time next week ? One of my kids has a terrible flu at the moment - I could be in trouble in a few days.

My medical history in my run up to my first FLM is soon to be translated into Nordig saga: misc bugs, one left torn achiles (rolled over 2002 entry because of), two twisted ankles (l.again, probably related), one metacarpal stress fracture (left foot), misc ITBS and knee probs, one plantar f(r.), shin splints (l.), black toe nails (which I'm rather proud of..) etc

Benz has also told me I may have malaria on a previous thread...

I could go on, but concious there's still a week to go !!!! (SARS ?)

Yes I wondered about SARS, any clues Womble?

thank god I am not the only one feeling like crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
04/04/2003 at 16:42
ditto. Still got a headcold from Tuesday. Someone told me to try Acanacia (?), a herbal remedy, so I'm popping out to get it now. Not at panic stations yet, but if doesn't clear by Monday, well... it's worry time!

Hope you all get well in time for the 13th.

Probably Echinacea MW.

It isn't working for me, but I know a lot of people who swear by it.

Also full of cold and pumping the vitamins, missed long run last week as away skiing, trying to console myself that the exercise/altitude did me good. All should clear up by next week but should I be running the 12 miler on my schedule for Sunday?

Hi All,
Been shoving in vit C, zinc, plenty of water and various other nice healthy things, I am feeling a bit better. Still coughing, but that might be more of a nervous thing now!

I was also advised to take some potassium as you lose a lot while sweating, and it helps prevent cramp/muscle aches. Well, I will try ANYTHING!!

Physio has found all sorts of things going on with my knees, so once FLM is finished (I am going to finish it), we are in for a few months intense work on the fat little things.

Good luck to all of you, I am the one with pink and blue fuzzy hair bobbles and matching white, pink, blue vest - Epilepsy Action colours!!
