Dear Annie

How long will it take her to walk?

Had my first almost pain free day in more than 2 weeks... was even able to do some one-legged squats without pain. Not sure whether it is the positive mental attitude that I will be ok on the 17th, the stretching, the anti-inflammitories or the magnets I have stuck all over my legs. In Boots I found some Relief-Xtra Magnet Therapy plasters.... had them on for 24 hours and the pain in my hamstring has definitely decreased.... So things are looking better and wanted to share with everyone.
Good luck all!

Lucrece, do you think you are going to run now? Having seen some improvement in my shin splints after 3 weeks of no running, I decided to try a very gentle jog (only 5 minutes!)on the treadmill yesterday, and am now in agony again. I really don't think I am going to be able to do it after all. The worst thing is I have done my sponsorship through justgiving.com, and most people have made donations rather than pledges, so the money has already been paid to the charity. Does anyone know if they can get it back? I know morally they won't want to ask, but I feel terrible that £1500 of donations will have been made without me running.

Gayle, that is really heartbreaking. Have you thought about walking the marathon. Nobody said it had to be run when you were sponsored. Plenty of people will be walking it for one reason or another. I dont know too much about shin splints, perhaps it isnt advisable to walk 26.2 miles with shinsplints. I just know that if it were me I would be desperate to do it whatever way I could. I don't know about how to give donations back but it seems to me that it would be very difficult. I really hope that you resolve this postively and wish you the best of luck whatever you decide.

The problem is that even walking is painful (today I'm having to take stairs sideways!), and it's my wedding just a few weeks after the marathon so I don't want to risk further injury (the aisle on crutches won't be good!).

I think I may have shin splints the worst pain is when I stand on my toes and the pain seems deep iinside my calf muscle or on my shin bone up the inside of my leg is this it. I ran last Sunday for 18 miles and it was really only very sore running up hills!

I have not run since but am panicking at the drastic taper should I try a gentle 10 this weekend? Help

Gayle - whatever you decide, remember that everyone here understands and supports you. Why not keep hoping for the best, and give yourself a gentle trial run two or three days before the event, and decide on the basis of that? At least then you can say you tried your very best to the last possible sensible moment, and drop out with honour. And in the end, April 17 will soon be just another date in the past, and there will be lots more FLMs to come. Best of luck whatever you decide, and have a fantastic time on your wedding day.

If you have already done 18 why panic.
You legs will thank you for the rest you give them now. You will not gain any more fitness now and could make thigs worse.
An easy hour is all that most schedules say for this weekend

Everything I read says you really must resist the temptation to do a longer run - stick to what they say, which I think is only about 5 miles for this weekend. I wouldn't do any more than that if I was you. And get some ice on those calves!

Thanks Rio and Gayle, I just have a deep down panic feeling, icing as I type!

Happy wedding day Gayle.

Morning gang
I have a bad ankle and have not run for a few weeks but have spent several hours on the bike to keep my fitness.Have decided not to do any now until race day.I have decided that any training i do now will not affect my time but it may affect whether i start or not.
However the reason for my post is this.I read earlier this week about the benefits of paracodal and its pain relief.I tried these over the last few days and they really knocked me out. I felt sick and weary.Anyway, the point i am making is dont wait until raceday to try new medication.I
I would appreciate any other names of srong pain relief

Its nice to have this thread remembered! Well regardless of sore foot i did a good run and came in at 3.54 (and 14 secs ) Inside 4 hour target so VERY happy and proud. The ironic thing is that it was my left leg that kind of locked at 23 miles and wouldnt bend anymore, so i had to put all my weight and running action on my bad sore right foot!!
In the last 2 miles i decided to try and 'up the pace' and so kind of hobbled but quicker, a sort of limping final sprint!!. In fact it may not have been quicker at all but i felt i was at least trying.
All in all I loved it. First Marathon and although i remember feeling really really in pain in last few miles already i am thinking..... mmmmm I wonder......If i did a few more long training runs.......

How about everyone else???
