Thank you for your suggestion Dubai Dave (Capetown sounds lovely). Unfortunately as this will be my first marathon I don't feel like making it any harder than necessary!

You could carve out a career in light entertainment and bag a celebrity place :)

Wouldn't do Sheffield in June - too hot.

There was Leeds end of April / beginning of May. Tough I am told.

you could always forge a number and bandit run it

Everyone's going to forge a 118 next year anyway.

The FLM 2004 will be just one big 118 party.

I´d consider Madrid marathon on 25th April 2004. It is well organized. There are volunteers who help you run at the pace you want to finish it. Compared to London´s it is not so big in number of participants but it is the largest in number of runners in Spain. Actually, 7969 got to the finish line last year. The people in the streets cheer a lot and the atmosphere is great. There´s even a group of runners belonging to a club called "Garabitas" who ask the runners who get tired to get on their "bus" so that they can feel better and enjoy the marathon a lot.
More information in English at WWW.maratonmadrid.org
Well, good luck, I hope you will be able to enter Flora London marathon but if you aren´t lucky, I´m sure you will enjoy Madrid marathon a lot if you choose it as an alternative.

I ran Barcelona this year as an alternative to London.
Obviously, it can't compare to the atmosphere and size of London but I found it really friendly and enjoyable. It was amazing running up La Rambla as the finale to the run. I certainly intend to return next year (it's on 21st March)

M,

this year there were some races in Europe in March and April that had more than 2000 runners, so that nobody has to feel lost while running them:

Barcelona, Rom, Marseille, Lyon, Paris, Bonn, London, Rotterdam, Turin, Zürich, Hamburg, Madrid and Padua. Linz had just over 1000 and might already be a bit small for me.
Duesseldorf, Prag and Vienna are in May and alternatives.

You can find links to their web pages under www.marathon-kalender.de, and then click marathon and the month you want.

I haven´t decided so far, but if I don´t get into London I am thinking about Paris or Rotterdam, maybe Lyon. I think it is nice to have it done while all the others are still doing their long runs.

And there are always the big ones in Boston or Vancuver.

Ooooooh, didn't realise there were so many spring marathons. Well, it least it goes to show there's more to life than FLM. I got so worked up last year when I applied for london and was so dissapointed when I failed to get in. I'm not even going to bother this year, I'd rather support one of the smaller marathons.

And if things get postponed there's always Rekjavik in August - a few forumites thinking of going...
