Insane Training Plan -- Wise idea?

Wtf is "Hench"?

When you say you want to be an athlete what sort of athlete do you want to be? If you want to be a runner then I'd spend the majority of my time on running.
If you want to be "Hench" then do what "Hench" people do.

Take a look at Mo Farah, he's a pretty decent runner would you describe him as "Hench"?

My advice would be don't eat 5000 calories a day. Good luck with winning that half marathon.

Scrap the "Hench" side of things if you want to run for a start.

Decide which is important to you, running or looking big/Hench

by no means am i knocking you down here but WINNING a half is a BIG ask and that amount of training you have will be mentally challenging and exhausting for you.

Don't be so negative Ja5onW. The boy's got ambition.

Firstly what the hell is hench?

Secondly. How can you possibly be an experienced 3mile runner if you do around 6-9mile a week at 8min pace?
04/06/2013 at 10:13

By your own admission, you're already an experienced 3mile runner, and doing a fairly tidy 6-9miles a week.

A couple of weeks of doing that Insanity video, with a couple of extra runs a week, and I reckon you could get pretty hench, as well as smashing the local running scene.

The insanity dvd isnt for runners. Whats your goal - being fit or fit for the half marathon ?
04/06/2013 at 10:23
So let me get this straight you want to hold 5:20min/mile pace for 13.1m on race day. What training are you doing at this pace?

On the whole abs thing. Get leaner. 15% isn't really that lean. Carrying that flab will mean no ammount of training will allow you to run fast enough to realistically target the win.

Are you a member of a running club? I would have thought that if you are targetting a win in a half-marathon, that is the starting point.

Lets not obsess over body fat - that 15% could be a crap figure from some digital scales. They can be very inaccurate.
He says he struggles to get 2500 calories in - so I don't see that he is carrying much flab at all.

Which half marathon are you doing Tom? I have been thinking about it and I would be concerned that 1hr 10 mins might not be fast enough to win.

04/06/2013 at 10:40

Tom- nice to have ambition, but i feel this may only lead to disappointment. Can you hold 5.20 min/mile for 3 miles and not feel smashed?

As said above, a solid core is important but you will be too exhausted to do your runs properly alongside the insanity work out. If you want to try and look good, do insanity, if you want to border on elite athlete level for your age then run!

Tom - if you cant hit your target pace for 2 miles - there is zero chance you can improve on that pace and hold it for over SIX times as long in 15 weeks time.

If it was that easy - don't you think we'd all be knocking out sub 70 half marathons ?
04/06/2013 at 11:23

Speak for yourself, cougie. I'm sure everyone else on this thread knocks out sub 70 half marathons all the time.

On that note I think I will retire.
If you can't do 70 mins for a half then it's not worth doing at all.
I hope all the other losers will be joining me on the running scrap heap.

It was fun whilst it lasted

I reckon sub 70 is doable in time if you sacrifice enough and work hard enough. The fact you managed 2miles at 5:30mm tells me with proper training you have chance to eventually reach sub 70 standard. But you should probably target a 5k at 5:20mm an aim to finish feeling you could of gone further. Then look at a 10k an so on.
04/06/2013 at 11:46

Hi Tom - where do you do all your 3 mile races? Or are they 5k parkruns? I can't find you on the parkrun database? 3 miles just seems a funny distance.

And you do all your running now at 8 min miles but can run 5:30/mile for 2 miles - that's pretty fast.

Even taking that 11 mins as an accurate level of your current standard that only converts to about a 1:20 half marathon (with the correct amount of HM training) - that is what the 16 weeks plan is for.

So if you break 1:20 I will be amazed. Sub 1:30 would be a pretty decent time for your first half.

Finally if you are 18 why are you jumping right in at a half marathon - what about 5k or 10k to bed in that 5:30min miling pace and maybe even drive it down to 5 min miling - how about aiming for a sub 15 min 5k - there is a thread on here by Nash who is aiming for that - have a look at his thread and see what real training looks like.

PS Are you religious or did you just forget about Sunday?

You're just jealous Skinny, even your coach thinks he can do it.
