Have built up good weekly mileage averaging about 20 30 miles per week but am concerned that 2 week holiday may jeopardize my hard work - should I try to fit in some running whilst away - am visiting Turkey in August

I have a similar problem but only for a week in Eygpt.  I will be going at about 6 in the morning.

I'd be a bit worried about running long distances in an unknown area at 6am. Plus there is the heat / humidity to contend with.

I'd do a few short runs around the resort and check out if the resort has a gym.

Or see if any of your travel pals will run with you.

Think I will work around both those tips - will try check out resort area first & then poss try a couple of runs early morning to avoid heat - wish me luck!!

Happy Holidays !

I did it last year in Mallorca and then Dublin.  Googled the address, worked out a route of required mileage, took the details with me and went out when I got there.

I'm quite happy doing "there and back runs", so the other thing that you could do is just run out for the necessary distance, turn around and go back, or, if you're not happy about going too far, do a shorter run and repeat it.

I was out at 6am, so were a lot of other people running along the beach - it was perfectly safe and very pleasant at that time of the morning.  Just make sure you take extra water with you - you'll need it.

If I can do it being 50+ and female, without coming to any harm, then I'm sure you can.

Yeah, keep running when you go away, then you won't feel sluggish when you get back. I went to Turkey a month ago during my last few weeks of marathon training, so did a lot of running on my holiday! Got stared at quite a lot, It's mostly male locals hanging around the resorts and I don't think they're that used to female runners, but didn't get a lot of hassle/heckling (but did get 1 proposal of marriage). I always annoy my family by going running everywhere we visit, but I always get to see more of the places that way than they do!

will be doing a lot of running when I visit Swanage again which is a great resort and the cliff walks

have a rest, you won't lose much fitness over 2 weeks and you'll come back to your training fresher.

I'm with DomF on this one, I don't think 2 weeks off should have a major impact on your fitness. If anything, I would say it would be beneficial to have a break. Fatigue levels drop quicker than fitness, so your body will have a chance to recover without losing too much fitness. Enjoy the break.

I disagree, two weeks is a long time re fitness.  A week, maybe, but two weeks break. . .

I wouldn't do it, but it's up to you.

I run every where I go and that over the years has been a lot of countries, i have never had a problem even in some pretty obscure parts of Africa and Asia. The only country I was unable to run in was Bangladesh simply because there was too much traffic and no sidewalk. People just think you mad and leave you alone, I have certainly experienced zero problems in Turkey.

Running whilst travelling allows you to see a city / resort in a way few travellers do, if you want to take it easy run every other day, as to heat run early 0600 or so.

I agree - running at 6.00 in the morning is brill, as there are not many people around and you can just enjoy yourself and have a chilled run.

I did it the day of my wedding in Cyprus, It really was a tonic and set me nerves at ease.

Again no one bothered my, just a few quizzical looks !

(obviously you wouldn't want to do it too often as you are supposed to be on hols - resting )

Just let someone know your rough route and when you expect to be back.
