Register Now For Ironman's Newest Event
August 1, 2010 - Regensburg, Germany
Beginning in 2010, the scenic Bavarian city of Regensburg will host Ironman's third event in Germany. The inaugural race on August Aug. 1, 2010 will serve as an official qualifier for the 2010 Ford Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, awarding 50 slots for pro and age group athletes. Registration is now open.

The organizer of the event, as in Frankfurt and Wiesbaden, is the sports agency Xdream, officially representing the World Triathlon Corporation in Europe. For the event in Regensburg, Xdream expects 1,200 to 1,500 athletes from approximately 40 nations.

Kurt Denk and Kai Walter (managing directors for World Triathlon Corporation / European Headquarters) are certain that the race in Regensburg will develop into one of the most important Ironman races in Europe, showing lots of potential in the number of registered athletes.

"I am sure that with Regensburg, and the region, we will establish another triathlon highlight in Germany, next to the Ironman Frankfurter Sparkasse Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt and Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe Ironman 70.3 Germany in Wiesbaden," says Denk.

Walter continues: "The city of Regensburg, and the region, offer ideal conditions for a challenging and attractive race. We are very pleased with our choice for the third Ironman venue in Germany."

Regensburg is one of the oldest cities in Bavaria, first mentioned around 179 A.D., and is the long-time place of activity of current pope Pope Bendict XVI. Located on the banks of the river Danube, the city is known not only for its numerous historical buildings in the city center, many of which are World Heritage Sites, but also for its university and three colleges. With a population of 133,000, Regensburg is the fifth largest city in Bavaria.

The swim will take place in the Lake Guggenberger See, just eight miles outside of Regensburg. The two-loop bike course, which travels through parts of the Bavarian Forest National Park will showcase a number of climbs, while also offering a picturesque backdrop of quaint villages. The run course is located on parts of the Danube Island and the historical city of Regensburg. The race finishes close to Steinerne Bruecke, a World Heritage Site of UNESCO.

Yes eccentric, you're a bit late on this one! I know the area quite well and there's some very serious climbs out there in the national park, good course for a strong biker.
