So having never raced a duathlon, but have agreed to race one early next year, but its a pairs event, you are not allowed to be over 20 metres away from your racing partner, I was just wondering, do you go hard on the first run and try and recover on the bike for hard on the last run or is it more of an overall effort all the way through?

SA - I've see Cat race - for him its more a gentle plod all the way round at what looks like Meldy's IM pace

It's a hard effort all the way through, SA.  The pace on the first run usually seems insanely fast and it's a fine line between getting it just right and overcooking it.  There's no real time to recover properly on the bike and you're just hoping to have enough left to get out of the blocks at a decent pace on the second run and hold on - it's only 5k after all for a standard distance.

If it's a pairs race though, I guess your run speed is dictated by the slower runner of the two, who's running closer to maximum speed and then gets to draft more on the bike (I assume you're allowed to work together as a pair on the bike leg?).

What CD said. It's traditional to go balls out on the first run and bike then blow up completely on the second run! Will be interesting to see how the pairs thing works.

Might be a good race for you Raf if they allow drafting...

Have just find out that the bike takes in sheep house lane, do they allow tow ropes?

The distance is just a tad longer than standard distance I think

4 mile run 21 mile bike 4 mile run

Given that the other end would be attached to me, a tow rope would be pretty feckin' useless!

Standard distance is 6 miles 25 miles 3 miles give or take.

Duathlon is harder than a oly Tri. You don't go much slower than your pb on the first 10k if you are fit.  It's just hang on from the start

I thought about this, but it is horrendously up North.

If you don't go much slower than your PB on the first 10k and just hang in there (mind-blowing), how do you approach the long-distance duathlons?

In fact, what long-distance duathlons exist in the UK besides Powerman?

And lastly, why does a duathlon training/events etc thread not exist on this board?
