Evening all

Bad luck IY ... Hope you get better quick

Not a bad day for me ..

- Insanity session

- 1 hr spin ... Focusing on drills and recovery
- 6k swim ... Done as 6 x 1000m ... Suffered a lot of bad cramp towards the end

Sorry to hear that IY.

Total training failure today (work, family stuff), and eaten crap.  Cue feelings of intense guilt.

Well I'm having a sh!tty day today. last night get a phonecall from my uncle saying he's in hospital, has had some scans and they think he's got a brain tumour   I then had the joy of phoning my mum (his only sister) to pass on the message. Still in a state of shock and not knowing what's going on until more tests are run, etc so not the best of days here

physically getting better (managed 20 mins breaststroke swim last night), but mentaly a bit flat...

I hope everything turns out better for you than it sounds.

Aww Fraggle, I hope tomorrow brings better news for you

I did a 3hr mtb ride today and got more cold than a cold thing on a cold day in Iceland.   Enough already

Thanks for you kind words people - we have slightly better news today: scans have shown no other abnormalilites in the rest of his body, and now he's on steroids and the swelling has reduced, he's been released from hospital. Now awaiting a biopsy at Addenbrookes to see what it is, and take it from there. The doctors are apparently quite positive (or this could be him being economic with the truth!) so fingers crossed all round.

Training, still nothing here, but now I'm not driving around the uk this weekend, I'm free to get out and do some.

That's a step in the right direction Fraggle, here's hoping it continues that way.

Just got an e-mail from a mate who's decided to do IM New Zealand next year.  Envious? Moi?

Tim .. it only seems like that, as i do almost all my training Monday to Thursday (13hrs this week) ... then have 3 days off ... its due to working away and long commutes

Will - do you think it works better that way - four intense days, then three rest days - instead of the standard 6 days? As you certainly hammer it in those 4 days!! Would you still do it that way even if you didn't have to for work reasons?

Training's a bit chaotic this week due to busy family life.  But did a swim I was pleased with this morning, a mile in 40 minutes (including some faffing with goggles that have suddenly started leaking).  That's good for me. Included a 9 minute 400m, when I joined NEWT a couple of months ago I was at 10 minutes.  Progress slow but pleasing!

WW, interesting question from Raf!

Ive been thinking a lot about this as the moment.

I consider myself quite fit ... and probably can 'out-beast' most people (even half my age) in my local gym on a hard endurance session ... BUT where things come apart is ... with age ... I need more time to recover than those same youngsters.

I am only in week 3 of my 20 week programme aimed at getting me a PB this year so this pattern of training works very well.

As the programme continues i will often add a 5th day (long or social ride OR 5-8mile tempo run) ... but for me I think 2-3 rest days works well .. I start each week feeling 'up for it'

saying that ... one thing i also introduce, as things ramp up, is yoga/stretching sessions and easy walks on my rest days to help activly promote recovery.

AND as always ... i tinker with things depending on how i feel

Interesting Will - I've certainly found recently that as the mileage has ramped up (in week 22 of Fink at the momnet) I've performed better with 2 rest days. Like you I consider myself pretty fit, but I need that extra recover time due to my rapidly advancing years!

Perhaps we could write a new book 'Iron fit for Old Gits'!
