Crumbs. People study this? I feel slightly apologetic now that I doused mine on Saturday with 2 kettles of boiling water

23/07/2012 at 14:54

sorry mate but why did you douse them??  they don't do any harm and it's only for one day as they fly off to form more colonies or act as bird/fish food

embrace nature in all it's beauty - even ants!!

Me and my sis doused them because they were swarming in the spare bedroom!

Just think of all those starving little baby birds that will have to go without their dinner tonight........well as ants are full of formic acid, very few birds would eat them anyway, but!!!!

23/07/2012 at 15:47

I think flying ants don't have the formic acid as they're queens in waiting?? could be wrong there though

the fish in the marina where I live (grey mullet mainly) don't mind them though - they're swarming the surface after them

Actually birds LOVE flying ants http://societyofbiologyblog.org/gulls-flying-ant-day/

Couple just emerging tonight, I think it's tomorrow in sunny Surrey! I am too old to play "Die Another Day" with a magnifying glass, but I bet the kids are out there.

Things looked a bit frisky tonight but I did not swallow any on the way home

Tomorrow is flying ant day in London (it's IOC approved!)
