EP- Fred Whitton need entering on the day the entries are released (around about new years day if I remember correctly) and even then with snail mail you never know... Dales Etap is similarly tough and a bit later in the year entries on line but get up in the early hours to enter or you won't get in.   A bit less popular but still a great race is the Grand Fondo Cymru which starts and finishes in Bala,  there is a choice of distances and you can opt to cut it short or go longer at a point in the course which might be a comfort.

monique thanks the organisor said that the best way to get in was to hand deliver an application and also made me think it was not idea for me!
So I'm going to do the London 2 Brighton next year and work up to this as it does sound awesome!

 Fred Whitton website

Someone mentioned a brick session. The Fell Running Association magazine had an article about a guy who for his 40th birthday: swam the length of Coniston Water (five and a half miles), cycled the Fred Whitton route, then completed the Bob Graham round. He couldn't fit it all in on his birthday obviously...

Like someone else said EP - though the FWC is a great event and still one of the toughest sportives there are plenty of other events that are very similar now.   If you want a real challenge then the toughest UK sportive is supposed to be the Dave Lloyd Mega Challenge in Wales - and you can guarantee an entry into that one.

On the FWC web site it says:

The 2009 Biketreks Fred Whitton Challenge will be held on Sunday 10th May 2009. The entry forms will be available on this website from January 6th 2009.

Paul Clavey said he did it in his article in the Autumn 07 mag, and he had bad weather from Honister Pass onwards - maybe you're thinking of someone else?
