As this is my first year and I have taken on a lot, I was wondering if anyone else is in the same boat or was in the same boat regarding training.

My swim plan starts with a total of 1500 metres swimming including drills and a 400 metre time trial. Running, start of with a 30 minute run.. ha, I am struggling, managed a 1km swim at lunch, furthest so far but still 500 metres short of the full session, running, struggling, managing a couple of miles run\walk. Biking isn't so bad.

So, did anyone else look at a 1500 metre swim and think ha!! or did you just get in the water\start running these distances from the off?

Chris I started last year with this tri thing and it took me ages before i could do 400 metres in the pool to start with I couldn't even put my face in the water, my personal best so far is 1700 metres in 1 hr in the pool.

Also this time last year I was starting the couch to 5K program for the 7th time, in November I "ran" a marathon. (Quotes because time was very slow).

So I think if you try and hit the time durations as best you can you'll see yourself improve with practise and time. Run walk is an acceptable strategy too.

The good news is swimming is a bit easier and a bit faster in wetsuit as they make you more buoyant. It won't save you if you haven't trained at all but should help once the weather warms up and we can venture out to open water.

Good luck.

Cheers Folks, much appreciated

Don't worry yourself. I was thinking on my run just earlier today that after three years of long distance training, I've achieved sub-standard ordinariness in three sports. It will get easier, Chris. You'll achieve a level of competence. For the vast majority of us, swim sessions remain things to be feared and endured. Just do your hours and it'll come.

1500m is a big distance. I've done oodles of ironman races and my first swim of the year wont be 1500m ! Did you pluck a distance out of the air ?

But you are very mentally strong though to tough it out and not quit

Nope, this is the entry level drill set for Swim Smooth, the basic beginners one, for babies and soft arses like me! Hell of a way to start, but if I keep at it I should get it sorted in the next week or so... the Fink drills are even harder and longer.

Thanks for all the responses

PS, How do I become a Pirate?

one year ago .. could almost swim 25m - i really mean almost hadnt biked for 20 years did my first 10k run in april 2011 - and not that quickly as I was a fat chuffer nearly one year on and its party time at the Outlaw soon - wouldnt have even dreamed of doing it if i hadnt looked on here and led astray

i cant believe its not even a year since i posted the above in the thread mentioned by Rafiki, so there you go from nothing to (hopefully) double ironman in 2 years. Youll be alright

first time I got in the poo to swim crawl I managed 800m

then 1000m the next time,

then 1200m

take your time, increase it slowly, and swim as often as possible......
I swim 2-3 times and its ok.
4 times a week and you will see real improvement along with a divorce

OC i would never recommend swimming in Poo its to viscous and slows you down
12/01/2013 at 09:34
Possibly the reason oc only did 800 meters that and the smell
