While surfing the marathon race calendar I found a brand-new event just announced for April 2008 - the Ironmaker. It's IM distance swim and bike on 19 April 08 in conjunction with the Bonn marathon on 20 April 08. Top German pro Andrea Brede has signed up and says it is an ideal way either for a newbie to get an idea of what IM is like, or as a season's warmup event for peeps doing an IM later in the year. Entry fee is 180 euros until 31 Dec 07.

the 3.8km swim will be from a ferry in the Rhein river (I'm used to that), followed by a 2-lap bike course (steep hills). Party on Sat for those who want to - then the mara on Sunday. Sounds like it might be a good Pirate season opener?

Does sound good but id rather go spring training somewhere warm like South of France.

Whats the weather like in Bonn mid April?

this appeals to me a lot more than FLM again, done that 7 times. Reckon I could get away with telling LJS I'm going up to Bonn to run the marathon and carefully omitting any mention of a little swim and bike warm-up the day before?

Oh but on the point of it being like an IM taster. It's not. I've done a similar thing but over three days. There is a big difference between getting off the bike to start running and not doing it until the next day when things can stiffen up.

ooh sounds like we might have the beginnings of a Pirate outing -SL, then maybe Zuppy can give us some pointers about Bonn, where to stay etc.?
