The thread on my crank has stripped. Obviously I need a new set, but anyone have any ideas of how to work the bugger off?

I'm thinking hacksaw!

Or 'gear puller'...

blow torch too...!! All tricks of the trade...!!

or the old classic ride around on it with bolt undone... it'll loosen off by itself... Always does when you least want it to anyhow!

I can imagine being in the middle of nowhere when... (tinkle)... My crank falls off! I'm off to Harrods in a bit so I'll give it a whirl!

(also looks to replace it with a nice new Alivio chainset... you gotta keep it looking pretty!)

Erm... Yup... twas about 8sp and 9sp chainsets... Can I use a 9sp set with 8sp cassette?

I thought that was a possibility... Groovy.

Strange all the same.

I have for a few years now with no problems in shifting at all...

One last question...

Where can I get a second hand Altus chainset?
24/09/2003 at 13:23
Alot of what 'they' say is to make sure you buy whole new kits... saves on any compatability issues...
but I've found if ya' set 'em up well, you get no issues of rub or mis changing...

I know a man see...!!!!
24/09/2003 at 13:23
I think that may well be a problem for me!
24/09/2003 at 13:24
Just ask Jon...
am sure we can sort it out...!
24/09/2003 at 13:28
Erm.... er.... ah...

www.bikemagic.com (a sister site to this one) and www.singletrackworld.com are both good for secondhand bike bits. Try placing a 'wanted' ad, but consider e.g. Deore as well as Altus or Alivio - the aftermarket really starts at Deore and new or secondhand it can be as cheap as Altus/Alivio.

Just make sure you get something that will fit a square-taper bottom bracket.

I think he's more of an XT boy meself..! But I agree about singletrack and bikemagic for being great sources of 2ndhand bits!
