ok theres enough words like Northern, Tri and iron to put me off

Thankyou Wilkie is there something special about it?

Is the word Ironman copyright?

25/06/2012 at 15:22

Yes, I think so.

Not sure that it's particularly more special than any other iron-distance race (never having done any myself), but a lot of pirates will be going there this year.

I'm sure one or more of them could inform you better than I

The Outlaw is this years Pirate Championship race

Does that mean that getting an M Dot tattoo, I would be breaching their copyright?

Ironman (TM) is indeed copyright - and the owners jealously guard the use of it.  so anyone putting on a race over the same distances as in IM cannot call it an Ironman, but can call it ironman distance.

Outlaw is the biggest UK IM distance event that is not an IM brand (there are 2 of those)

25/06/2012 at 15:25

Technically yes

25/06/2012 at 15:26

Out of interest would an Ironman tattoo be copyright also?

no - it comes under personal use terms.  using IM and M.dot etc for commercial purposes (like races, advertising etc) isn't allowed

25/06/2012 at 15:28

Didn't know that   (Not that it stopped me getting the Tat anyway)

25/06/2012 at 15:30

aha thanks

25/06/2012 at 15:33

there was a case last year I think when WTC tried to stop a tattooist in Kona selling M-dot tats.  I think they were more concerned about the guy making money out of their trademark on "their island" - don't know what the outcome was though

I guess their view is that by using it for personal use, they are getting "free" advertising anyway.
