He'll be suggesting that you have to know how to swim next

Excellent - I can't do a sub-4 so no point in trying an IM.

That's a great relief for me

I aint a triathlete

but this smacks of elitism to me

it doesnt take account of the sheer bloody mindedness of some people against the odds

(i depsise elitism with a passion)

i guess he thinks that if a 3hour marathoner does the IM mara in close to 4 hours then those doing 5hr+ for a standalone would take even longer. actually i think the slowest marathoners might not lose to much over their standalone. he also might not have taken into account that being a bit heavy is less of a disadvantage in biking (and not at all in a swim). 8hr bike, 6hr run, 2hr swim and you can finish an IM. the fact is he probably doesn't have much experience of slower athletes so doesn't know what's possible. fair enough - most of us have real trouble comprehending what doing a 9hr IM really means. which of us really understands what it means when Haille Gebresallassie runs an entire marathon at a pace many of us can't even do 400m at! It's so far out of my range of experience! I think you're right IW - the Leders just don't comprehend those at the back.

I think the slower marathoners get closest to their marathon pbs than faster ones in IM

But I have no stats to back this up

Happily for the sport such ignorance is rare , Steve Bayliss and Bella raced SA and Jan gets a mench in his  race report.

Also I have met a lot of the pros in the bleachers when the last  finishers are coming in and the majority of them have great respect for the age groupers and simply cannot  believe that people are prepared to keep going for that long.

ditto - I have had similar conversations with them, 'centric. A phrase several of them have used is: 'that's REAL endurance.'

I hate dogs, does that mean I shouldn't do any more IMs?

and my stand alone marathon pb is only 20 minutes quicker than my IM marathon pb

but then I'm pants

Just another example of someone imposing their own personal standards onto another?

How many times on here do you see posts dismissing others method of training/racing ?
