World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) announces that the Ironman UK and Ironman 70.3 UK events will operate under new leadership. Chris and Ali Boon, who introduced Ironman UK in 2001 and have served as organisers since, will be stepping down as producers of the events. Kevin Stewart has been appointed to Managing Director for Ironman events in the UK and Ireland. Kevin brings more than 20 years of sports marketing experience to his role, focusing the last 10 years on developing the largest multi-sport events in the UK as well as the country's first closed-road cycling event.

“The Ironman brand is established in the UK, but it is time for us to step down and let Kevin steer the course for events,” said Chris Boon. “We have enjoyed every minute of the past decade, making friends along the way and witnessing thousands of finishers cross 17 finish lines. We know the next 10 years will be as thrilling as the last and we look forward to watching from the sidelines! Thank you to staff, captains, marshals and volunteers for making the events possible and thank you to each and every competitor – the athletes are what make the events truly special.”

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to further develop the Ironman brand in the UK at this exciting time in its history,” said Kevin Stewart, managing director for Ironman events in the UK and Ireland. With the introduction of new events in Wales and Ireland, we are expanding the Ironman portfolio. Our team will be working hard to build on the foundations laid to date with a focus on delivering the ultimate event experience for participants and spectators.”

While a new Race Office will open in the near future, enquiries should be directed to UK@ironman.com or 01865 596266 at this time.

"and thank you to each and every competitor" even the ones they sued or banned?

Good fucking riddence, in my opinion the pair of them have done more to wreck the Ironman brand than anyone else.

If the new guys can placate Barlos, we probably have a classic race! Lurks with interest.

Lol !

I did hear that there were bikes nicked from transition in Monaco - how unlikely was that !
14/02/2011 at 11:05
and UK 70.3 had some nicked a few years ago - Spen Smith's being one if I recall??

I don't think it's so much the Boon's standing down as being kicked into the long grass as WTC took the franchise back last year as they intend to manage events directly rather than via franchisees.

There were bikes nicked overnight last year from T1 at Wiesbaden 70.3 - the thief or thieves cut through the fence.

Kevin was at TCR this weekend just gone- WTC are starting/ramping up an Olympic length world championship a la IM and 70.3.  IIRC the Liverpool tri this year is a qualifier for the 'world championships'... ah here's the blurb

Liverpool Triathlon joins World Elite

Liverpool Triathlon joins the prestigious worldwide 5i50 triathlon series.

Liverpool Triathlon has joined the 5i50, a new and prestigious world Triathlon series supported by  WTC, owners of the IRONMAN brand.  The City joins Miami, Frankfurt, Zurich, Las Vegas and New York as an official host city in 2011. The race will act as a qualifier for the world’s richest triathlon -  the Hy-Vee Triathlon in Des Moines, Iowa - which will be the 5i50 series Championship event and will be held in September.
