I'm signed up for the Great East Swim (2m) on 16 June but will likely sign up for Flat Out in Fens 112 miler, if there are any Pirates out there willing to invite me into pack for some free speed?

Also, anyone aware of races the preceding weekend (South / East England)?  I could do with help getting in the training miles for Outlaw.

I havent actually checked any races in June as yet ....

Plenty in May with the Pearson and C100 tho

Hideously expensive but some good OW swims here.  I might do the Poole one on 6th May. Good starting practice, although £30 seems a lot to pay for that....

feeling pretty nervous about the longest day sportive. Have been sticking to the fink plan and havent missed any sessions (even a few extra on the bike) but havent been anywhere near 112mike. 75 miles the longest.

What kind of average speeds are you looking at/time looking to complete? Might be looking for a wheel or two to tag along on??

ajford ... I am not sure it will be that fast as I suspect there will be a few lumpy bits

Weather forescast is not looking too bad at the moment either

I dont think there are any start times, from 0745 I think?

Cat, how long (short) is the shorter one .. you may be able to take an early shortcut ajford if you findit hard going?

ajford, you'll not be alone in making the step up from 75 miles as I am making a step up on Sunday, but that's 'only' to 100 miles.

It is a bit of a brutish 100 miles though so I'll be taking it very easy on the long hill sections.  There are also bale out points along the route, but I'm not contemplating that.  It's going to be 100 miles or zero!

Good luck, but don't let nerves take over.  I'll look forward to you posting how great it was.

I was down for the short Longest Day, but not no more.

ajford1 - I have just received the entrants pack.  Am happy to let you have a copy of each of the routes so that you can decide what to do

90km. Having seen both maps you could cobble together a bail-out route from the longer route to about 50km on the shorter.

I am thinking of cycling to the start and back....another 36 miles. The full 112 mi was too much of a step up from the 65 milers I'm knocking out at the moment.

VT'd. You seem to do an inordinate of mileage in such a small area!

LOL Cat.  I often think of the loops in a straight line as the crow flies.

eg. The IM bike distance is from my house, round the City Hall in Belfast and back to my house.  That's a flippin long way in my mind.

This 100 miler is a local run.  It has maybe come a little early for me but I won't get too many organised chances to ride that distance so I'll take it.

You are thinking in a similar fashion to me in that we also have a 100km event at the same time.  It's a 40 mile round trip to the start/finish so I could warm up and cool down at an even pace if I bikes there and back.

Now I'm indecisive, faffing being my strongest discipline.

Now when you mention the IM distance like that......I've been over a few times for work. 112mi is just shy of Belfast Intl airport to Derry and back (across both bridges).

That's a long bike ride...

And with a big lumpy bit right in the middle.  My local club ride that route regular just for the buzz of coming back down at speed.

I came off a slightly smaller mountain last night in pouring rain.  It was running down the gravely road in torrents and I was so nervous that I had my brakes on full the whole way down.  Climbing is defo easier than descending in my inexperienced but stubborn book.

I had to get off and walk down a hill on Saturday .. frightened the life out of me

not a fan of steep descents either...

thanks for the support regarding the longest day, ive decided im just going to go for it. Ive ridden as long before but over a whole day and not in one go. Just going to get the nutrition right and nail it.If it all goes wrong ill take the shorter route. Realy hope the weather is ok...

ajford, im going to be riding the course pretty gently, there are a few challenging upflats so want to save my legs for the end.

Overall ill probably average about 13mph, ill be happy with 8 hours but im treating it as day out and time in the saddle.

I'll also be looking to start in the first wave so im not under pressure time wise.

Dont feel nervous, you shouldnt have anything to worry about, its a nice route and despite the challenging upflats I dont think its a particularly hilly course overall.

Barlos what time are you thinking of setting off ??

Overall ascent was about 1200m so all in all not a bad course
