Personally, I think it is good of the BTF and ITU to protect the public by not allowing me to wear speedos and a crop top...

OK - let's make this kit rule clear

here is the rule:

22.5 Competitors must be adequately clothed at all times, the minimum  being a one- or two- piece non-transparent  swimsuit,  together with a cycling  or running top, if appropriate, with a gap no greater than 10cm (4”).  All competitors must ensure their upper body (especially the chest area) is clothed during the cycling and running sections of the event. Front fastening tops and trisuits must be fully fastened at all times.

the bolded section is pretty unequivocal so that precludes your suggestions meface.

"All competitors must ensure their upper body (especially the chest area) is clothed during the cycling and running sections of the event."

If having an unzipped top equates to an unclothed state (reveiling the chest) then surely an unzipped back amounts to exactly the same thing. There may not be any nipples on your back, but who has a problem with men's nipples? Womens nipples are view somewhat differently, but I doubt many women would choose to race with theirs on show anyway.

I can't disagree about the back thing - but I think that backs don't cause as many "ethical" issues as fronts/chests do and unzipping the back is pretty common amongst the elite triathletes so the ITU seem to be pretty happy with it.

and fwiw - all elite athletes racing ITU events (world cup, champs, olympics etc) have to submit their kit for scruitiny prior to every event to ensure it conforms to the ITU standards which covers things like logo sizes, name placement, design etc. and without having their kit approved, they are not allowed to race although "neutral" kit can be supplied to them if that happens.

Was it Jodie Swallow who had a problem cos her boobs made her sponsored panel bigger than it should have been ? That probably raised the viewing figures I guess.

yep - she did have that issue a couple of years ago.  and I also like the pic on this page of her trisuit living up to it's name - http://www.tri247.com/article_7313.html

If they get rid of the swimsuits then the viewing figures will go through the floor.
