I've trawled a few threads and read plenty of reviews but I still cant decide which turbo to buy. I dont want to spend anymore than £100 to £150.

i've read decent reviews about Cycleops trainers (Mag, Magneto and the Fluid2) as well as decent reviews about the Tacx Sirius, but I havnt got a scooby which one is best.

Does anyone have any comments or other recommendations in my price bracket - I want something that is going to have enough resistance to be able to train pretty hard on.

I have the Tacx Sirius and the resistance will certainly be enough to train hard on, when the resistance is cranked right up it can be hard work. you can also use your gears to increase the resistance.

I think that most turbos are equal within the price bracket, some are slightly noisier than others, as mines in the garage with the laptop music in i dont notice it

Be careful with fluid  trainers if you want to use them out in the garage in winter - very cold temperatures the fluid is a little bit like honey.

I've got a Tacx Sirius and for the price (£100 from Chain Reaction Cycles) it's a very good choice.

Hail Hail

You still not sorted one out yet?  Bit towards the pricely end, but the Minoura Hypermag  (halfway down the page - nice yellow one) is very good.  Its what I've got.

thanks for the feedback - it will indeed be used in the cold garage.

RB - didn't want to be seen to spend any "me" money before Christmas, and the promised "loan" item never materialised.

I can get the Sirius for £102 (chain reaction is £125 nowadays) - so reckon I'll get one of those.

Is it worth buying the block for the front wheel (£15) or should I just use a book ?

Use a book, but definately get a trainer tyre (either conti or tacx).

thanks - but can I use a trainer tyre on the road too ? I dont want to have to keep swapping tyres, I'll be using the same bike for Turbo and road, and I use the bike to commute on most days.

No definately not.  But using the bike on the turbo will lead to a noisy and rough ride and shred your tyres quickly.  Keep your eye out for a spare wheel (lowest possible quality with a QR skewer, about £30 or cheaper second hand) and a cassette.  It really will make a lot of difference, more than spending another £100 on the actual turbo.
