I'm after some advice on a decent set of winter tyres for my road bike. Can anyone help  on which would be a good option

I'd go for Michelin Pro4Endurance - they are the updated Krylion Carbons - wore them through without a puncture.    I'm sure other manufacturers have their own equivalent - I wouldn't go for too much puncture protection - something nice and grippy is nicer and I'd rather fix a puncture than slide out in a corner.   Maybe go for 25mm for a bit more contact with the road.

+1 for Gatorskins

there's quite a good review of the best tyres of 2011 on BikeRadar - nothing much will have changed since that review

I also have Gatorskins and wider ones as Pops suggested.  (I think mine are super fat 28s!)

I donned some Michelin Pro 3 Race over the summer because (a) they were on special offer and (b) the white walls look kinda dapper.    A few hundred miles in, no punctures, no sign at all of cutting up, and whether it's my imagination or not they seem to roll and grip better than Gatorskins. So until any appearance of the puncture fairies I'm happy to leave them on as my winter training tyres.

Phil - MPro3's are more of a race tyre (I use them on my race bike) so they will roll better than Gatorskins but they aren't as robust as G'skins which will take the worst of the winter debris out there.

I've got gatorskins on one bike and they're good.

I've also got some huge Schwalbe Marathon tyres on my cross bike - they're heavy but bombproof.

+1 for four seasons, although gators are a good alternative

STrange, I ran Pro race 3s all season for a couple of years, never had a puncture. STuck on 4 seasons and punctured in about 100 yards at about 30mph (on the front). The 4 seasons were very stable whilst floppy though! Even if my arse wasn't at the time. No problems since though.

Mostly use a 32 knobbly set on my cross bike SS in winter. Bombproof!

25mm Schwalbe Durano Plus. Like Marathons but for the road. Kevlar bead so they're easy to change the tube on too.
