They do exist outside of theUnited States.  There are a couple inSpainand there is at least one inSwitzerland.  I have a hankering to attempt such a race, when I have had a bit more experience with high ascent/descent races.

Does anybody know anything about these events, and would any of them be suitable for an overseas runner?

All events are suitable for overseas runners, with the right training.  Note that there's no event in Europe with a single 10,000 metre ascent - there ain't no mountain high enough!

Barkley sounds too much like hard work!

Barkley - where Hal Koerner happily accepted an RTC (refused to continue) at 40 miles and James Adams an RTC as 20 miles! I'll pass too methinks.

Apparently they play 'duelling banjos' at the start

Tor des Geants has to be the daddy of European montain ultras.
