Chewed them! We were just thinking of saving time for the runners and did some of the work for them.

you are gross !!!- thats outrageous saving runners time

Volunteers make the event happen. From laughing at your pain to pre chewing your food.

As long as I make the cut-offs, I'm happy.  If that means taking a time penalty in order to chew my own food, then I think that's a price that I can live with.

Wib - thank you for the pointer to the map.  Cos it's on the SDW100 page I hadn't spotted it.  Next time I'm down there I'll make a point of heading up from Jevington, finding that trig point and the route down into Eastbourne.  (I figure I'll be up against it time-wise and too fried to navigate by then, so want the feet to know the last 10 miles or so without me needing to engage brain.)

I'm doing this.  12 months ago, I was an ultra novice.  I did the Malvern Hills ultra running 55 miles in May and loved it.  Now I'm signed up for the SDW100 (holy sh!t) and I'm doing the SDW50 as training.  I can't quite get my head around it.

If you had told me to run for another 45 miles as I staggered across the finish line of the Malvern Hills, I would have laughed and then tried to kill you.

Went out on my first recce of the route on the 23rd.  Botolphs to Kingston.  Pleased how straightforward and well marked it is (particularly after the frustrations that were the Vanguards Way ultra) but am feeling more than a little intimidated by the distance.

I'm think I'm in. First ultra. Ran Greensand in 4:30 last year. On a scale of 1-12, how hard do you all rate this?
20/01/2013 at 19:50
Greensand marathon is a tough race so great prep for an ultra. This stretch of the south downs way has some solid climbs but i would not say as relentless as Greensand. Obviously this race is a bit longer. My guess it would be a between 7-9 depending on the weather.

Accommodation wise i was looking at the premier inn in worthing.

Compared to what? As a stand alone ultra it's not difficult at all, the difficulty comes from how you run it
21/01/2013 at 09:35

Compared to other 50 milers maybe?  Canal route being no more than a 5, trail with some hills up to 9 (depending on the hills), mountains or bog filled heath 9-12?

The difficulty does come from how you run it; I was planning a two person team in panto horse costume...

21/01/2013 at 10:26
Well good luck with the costume, I assume you're going to be the back?
And by your scale no more than seven, it's all perfectly runnable by an average runner
21/01/2013 at 10:43

Which would depend on your definition of average, of course.

21/01/2013 at 10:45

What happened to the 1-10 scale?! Are we just making our own scales up now?

Working on a scale of 3 - Z I would rate the course as Orange.

21/01/2013 at 10:47

I don't think i can take this any more! It's all... just... so... ARBITRARY!

(And that's exactly how I'll describe my dismal finishing place at the end of the SDW50)

21/01/2013 at 11:08
You're just being silly now WiB, you know as well as I do orange is only for winter races
21/01/2013 at 12:32

Is it not out of 12 because normal races go up to 11, but in ultra-running we need a harder scale?
