There's a new sports nutrition brand on the market designed to power you through your training. FUEL is all about breakfast and has three products on the market: a breakfast milkshake, crunchy granola and on-the-go porridge pots.
The concept is simple: fast and convenient energy with a balance of carbs and protein to support your workout. When a bundle of FUEL products landed in front of me, I was fairly seduced by their vibrant packaging and keen to dig in. The fruit-loaded chunky granola was a particular favourite in the team, packed with fruity pieces and oat clusters, which despite the high sugar content (sugar comes second to oats in the ingredients) makes a filling breakfast or accompaniment to yogurt for an afternoon snack.
So how did it rate in terms of pre-workout fuel? As a pre-run porridge devotee, I wasn’t convinced that anything else would quite cut it. But I found myself pleasantly surprised by its slow-burning energy properties through a two-hour steady run.
The experience was made even better with the chocolate milk drink recovery on my return. Although this is also designed as a fuelling meal replacement, it made an equally effective recovery drink and tasted like a real chocolate milkshake with only a fraction of the fat.
