6. Avocado

Here’s what often gets lost in our fat phobia: Some of those fats are actually good for you.

More than half the calories in each creamy green fruit comes from one of the world’s healthiest fats, monounsaturates. These fats differ from saturated fats in that they have one double-bonded carbon atom, but that small difference at the molecular level amounts to a dramatic improvement to your health.

Numerous studies have shown that monounsaturated fats both improve your cholesterol profile and decrease the amount of triglycerides (more bad fats) floating around in your blood. That can lower your risk of stroke and heart disease. Worried about weight gain?

Don’t be. There’s no causal link between monounsaturated fats and body fat.

Substitutes: Olive, canola and peanut oils, peanut butter, tahini

Recipe idea: Stuff slices into omelettes; remove the pit and fill an avocado half with tuna salad; spread some onto a sandwich in place of mayonnaise; or mash one with a few tablespoons of salsa for a quick, guacamole-like dip to use with tortilla chips.

"those who had been drinking five or more cups of tea per day were 26 percent less likely to die of any cause"

There was a letter in the Lancet recently about this sort of statement.

haha! took me several minutes to realise what was wrong with that statement !

well pointed out

surely as one cause of death decreases another cause must increase.

I also thought that you could only drink tea, not eat it, so the title "10 foods you should eat every day"  is a bit of a misnomer.

Good to know that I am now varying percent less likely to die of any cause depending on my intake of food and amount of daily exercise.

I think we are all 100% certain to die of some cause no matter what we eat or drink. That's Kemp's point

Imagine being immortal though.  At what point would it dawn on your that that would be the worst possible fate imaginable?  Or would you learn through eons of time to live with it?  I suppose you wouldn't have any choice.

Being immortal would be fine so long as you had a really bad memory.

Perhaps that's the way things actually are.  We're not going to know any different are we?  The Big Bang wasn't the start of everything, just a time when lots of shit was going down.  That's what I reckon.  Read Spinoza.

Not sure how drinking tea helps you avoid getting hit by a bus but there you go.
Posted: 12/03/2012 at 17:36

Well, if you're making and drinking tea somewhere, it will keep you away from the road and thence from interacting with said bus....unless of course you are drinking the tea whilst crossing the road, and then it could be said to increase the chance somewhat.

The caffeine in the tea will help keep you more alert and aware of traffic around you, including buses.

There's some evidence that eating an average of 1/4 grapefruit per day leads to an increased risk of breast cancer, so may not be the best thing to eat every day.

So don't have grapefruit if you want melons
