Meet our two latest Members of the Month

Posted: 10 October 2007

Each month, we select a lucky newcomer to RW's 365,000-strong member community and reward them with £100 of Asics kit. Here we catch up with our two most recent winners...

Burke to Basics

He may only have logged on for the first time last month, but already James Burke (aka JBSurrey and our September Member of the Month) admits he’s found the forums "a great way to stave off boredom at work."

Although no stranger to running – he was intending to apply for the Armed Forces last year - James has only recently come back to the sport after a six-month break, inspired by a work colleague who's already started training for next year’s Flora London Marathon. And he’s certainly set his ambitions high, having also signed up for the FLM next April, as well as a number of short-distance races over the coming months.

"I’ve found both the beginner training articles and the INSPIRE virtual running club really motivational," he says, "and I love reading all the product reviews when I'm looking for new kit."

Needham to Know

Ask our August Member of the Month Karen Needham (aka Super-Plod) how she got into running and she’ll claim she’s still not "really a runner", having only stepped on a treadmill for the first time a few months ago. But given that she’s recently completed her first ever race – a hilly, off-road 5K – and joined a local running club, we’d have to disagree.

"I had no idea running was so popular," Karen admits, "I started exercising to lose weight and first visited the Runner’s World site for nutrition advice. But then I discovered the forums – they’re brilliant. I love chatting to like-minded, friendly people and sharing my experiences. I was soon persuaded to train with other runners, and yes, I guess I have been bitten by the bug!"
