The 2nd August 2014 will see the start of the BUFF® Epic Trail Aigüestortes race.
Starting and finishing in picturesque Barruera (Vall de Bohi, Alta Ribagorca, Lleida) the race will take the runners around the Aiguestortes and Sant Maurici Lake National Park. This glorious location, famed for the 200 plus crystal clear lakes and rivers that enrich its Pyrenean features offers an unique atmosphere. The tough yet beautiful route will cover 100km of mountain paths, with a cumulative vertical climb of 8,000m and maximum gradients of 56% that will position the BUFF® Epic Trail Aiguestortes as one of the most exceptional trail running races in the world.
However, it’s not only the landscape that’s note-worthy, its biological treasures are extraordinary too. A true paradise for nature lovers: the runners will find lakes, torrents, waterfalls, peat bogs, rocky ground, rugged peaks and leafy forests of hooked pine, fir, wild pine, birch and beech, as well as interesting alpine or northern plants and animals including the Bearded Vulture which lives on the sheer mountain faces and otters in the streams.
The BUFF® Epic Trail Aigestortes has been designed around the core values of environmental respect and responsibility along guidelines shared by BUFF® and by all the sponsors, volunteers and runners involved. The event will be certified with the “Mountain Parks” stamp.
Due to the nature of the course and for safety reasons, the race will be strictly limited to just 350 participants. Without doubt this route will prove challenging to even the most experienced trail runners, some of who will be taking part: including Elite athletes, Anton Krupicka (USA), Arnau Julia (ESP), Joe Grant (USA) and Nuria Picas (ESP).
The race has now also been declared a qualifier for the North Face® Ultra Trail du Montblanc® (UTMB) and will be worth 4 points.
