RW Forum Upgrade

The Runnersworld.co.uk forum has just had a major upgrade

After nearly a week of testing, restesting and testing some more, we're proud to announce a major upgrade to the RW forums. It's now possible to post images, YouTube clips and smileys in the forum and a lot more besides.

And because we appreciate that not everyone wants their bandwidth cluttered up with images, we've also given you the option to turn the feature off using the My Forum section of your profile:

If you don't want to see the nasty images, just choose 'render as link' and you'll just see a link. The same goes for the forum smileys which will appear as text. If you want to use the previous forum editing tools choose 'Basic Editor'.

If you do fancy using the new forum features, you'll find a whole load of new buttons above the reply box at the bottom of the forum. Most of them are pretty self-explanatory and the nice thing is that it's now 'wisywyg', so if you format a phrase in bold, it appears in bold, which is nice.

If you have any questions or problems, please take a look at our FAQ Section at the beginning of this thread, but if that doesn't help, please don't hesitate to let us know.

Hey guys,

Your web team have had another busy week and we can now reveal a new forum message form. After rounds of testing (thanks for all your help and feedback) we're now ready to set the features live.

Thanks Daniel

FAQs Section

Can I turn images and smilies off?
Yes. We appreciate that not everyone wants their bandwidth and forums cluttered up with images. If you don't want to see the nasty images, just choose 'render as link' and you'll just see a link, same with the 'forum smilies' which will appear as text. While if you want to use the previous forum editing tools choose 'Basic Editor'.

Is the image uploader permanent?
That’s really up to you guys. We hope it becomes useful and isn’t a feature that becomes abused. Fingers crossed it stays.

Can you post an image and text on the same post?
Yes. Just write your text, add the image, then type the rest of the message

Which images can I include?
1 They have to be on external websites and not your desktop
2 Some external sites or web hosts may not allow their images to be imbedded into pages on other sites. We’re finding examples as we go along but one would be Blogger
3 This is a busy forum and if your image is hosted somewhere that has a bandwidth limit, it's possible that posting an image here could cause your limit to be exceeded because of the number of times it will be viewed.
4 If you need somewhere to store your images online, popular free choices include Flickr and Photobucket

My image isn’t uploading?
So far the most common mistake has been because you may have been uploading web pages* instead of images. Don’t worry, it’s an easy mistake to make (I’m holding my hand up here too) but here are useful guidelines
This link isn’t an image (it ends with htm and is therefore a web page):
http://www.richk.co.uk/SodSlog06/SodSlog0650.htm

This link is an image (it ends with jpg (images can also end with gif, png))
http://www.richk.co.uk/SodSlog06/Before/DSC02137.jpg
* To get the url of the image itself, open the web page, then right click the image and (depending on your browser) choose 'copy image location' or 'properties' and copy the url of the image.

Why don’t the forum buttons always appear?
A few of you have mentioned this. Please remember that you have to click on the link below in order to use them.
http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/forum/forummessages1.asp?UTN=109658

I’ve clicked on that link but the buttons still don’t appear. What’s going on?
Firstly, please check that you have Javascript turned on.
If that doesn’t work then chances are you’re a Mac user and use Safari. Sorry, but there’s little we can do about this. We’d kindly suggest that you try using Firefox or Opera – the new features work perfectly well in those browsers. Still no luck? Then please drop us a line and we’ll get back to you. - Thanks again

Daniel RW

Posted: 09/08/2007 at 09:55

this looks very cool- but I liked the simple view and "proper" smilies...
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 09:56

much more fun
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 09:57

oh, and I *definitely* don't like that you turned my "proper" smilie into a cartoon
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 09:57

how do you put videos on i want to play
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:00

You've got a photo of me!

Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:00

lp: don't worry, you'll be able to 'turn off' the cartoon smilies and images under your 'my forum' section if the system goes fully live.
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:04

I really hate it.
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:05

I think before adding gadgets, something as basic as getting the page of the forum to use your full screen with would be more appreciated.

Well, by me at least...
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:09

For some reason the last few days there's been a big block of white I have to scroll through to reach the threads. Yes sort that out before ruining the forum with picures please.

Smiley faces are one thing - you can take or leave them - but pictures and videos just aren't necessary when you can link things anyway.
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:11

I click on Daniel's link on the first page, and it doesn't load. I'm just getting a huge white screen.

:o(

[turn that into a cartoon smiley at your peril!]

Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:12

Popsider, I'm sorry about the white space issue. Can you please send me a screen grab and a link to page that has this problem? I'll get our tech team to fix it right away.

No I can't as I've got no idea of how to do it - that is no idea how to do a screen grab and no idea of how to send it to you if I did.

Kittenkat: text then image

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1198/879761818_0abc0d47f6_b.jpg

then text. Just click the cursor back into the message box. Or does that not work?

Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:15

I've been seeing the white screen thing occasionally- often if I navigate to a thread from "my forum"-
If I scroll down a page or 2 you see the real page.
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:15

Guys,

I forgot to say that once this new feature goes live on the site you'll will be able to switch off smilies and images from within your My Forum section.

How do you attach these smileys and pictures?
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:17

Fishpool have you come back as some sort of overpaid "consultant"?
:)
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:17

I think there are instructions if you click on the link in the first post on the thread.

Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for it to load, so I don't know either.............
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:18

Havn't got a clue whats going on, link in 1st post takes me to a duplicate of the thread?

Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:21

Hi Popsider, if you're using Outlook as your email client, you can do the following:

  • Click on your web browser with the offending page
  • Press the 'print screen' button on your keyboard
  • Start a new message in outlook, right click in the text area and press 'paste'
  • Enter Daniel's email address: daniel.benson@natmag-rodale.co.uk
  • Hit send!
Hope that helps

TT, I wish. No, working with Magicalia at the moment on the whole platform.
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:22

This thread is really really slow!!!

I hope if we get forum pics and smileys it not going to slow down page updates to a crawl?
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:22

Bouncing Barlist, it is the same thread but the message box will have newfangled buttons
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:23

Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:23

Daniel,

When I click the link if the first page, I just get another window with this thread in it (same as Barley).

Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:24

Love the smileys but don't think we need the pictures. They added this feature to another forum I used to frequent (obviously before I saw the light and RW became my skive of choice). The more pictures were added to a thread the slower it became so a long thread with lots of pictures became so slow that people just gave up on them.

We have links, we don't need pictures, IMHO.
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:25

ooh!  As a total techno-idiot, can't work out how to insert the image thing...
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:25

Wilkie, when you click on the link scroll down to the message box. You'll then see the new forum buttons
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:27

Same here as Barley and Wilkie - the link just gives an identical copy of this thread. No extra buttons, instructions or anything.
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:27

[drums fingers]

....still not loading.......
Posted: 09/08/2007 at 10:28

  1. One
  2. Two
  3. Three

Images, too.
