Review: High5 protein recovery

This recovery drink declares itself as the ultimate post exercise shake. It offers 2 ½ parts carbohydrate to 1 part whey protein isolate. Designed to immediately replenish your glycogen stores, it offers 40.6 grams of carbohydrate per serving. Then a decent 19.5 grams of protein to further support your muscle recovery. Depending on the flavor choice – three options are available, chocolate, banana and summer fruits – there is less 1 gram of fat per serving and an average of 250 calories a pop.

Unlike many sports recovery products, these aren’t packed with preservatives and artificial flavorings and promise to contain entirely natural flavorings and to be free from artificial colours, sweeteners and preservatives. They can be mixed with water or milk, the milk combo gives a richer taste much like a tasty chocolate milkshake, but it is equally drinkable and appetising with water for a less indulgent post-workout drink.

You can’t fault High5 on taste and the science behind the shake caters specifically to runner’s needs. Perhaps not necessary after every run but definitely worth investing in to support harder sessions, particularly if you are training on consecutive days. You can buy them here for £18.99 for a box of 10 conveniently portioned out sachets. One final note, if it's chilly, which occasionally happens in British 'summer time' you can add these to hot milk for an ultra comforting recovery drink.

I've used these before and they really do help you recover much faster, but £18.99 is a bit steep for 10, I usually buy my High 5 from a company called Muscle Finesse, their products have much better value for money.

Odd, cos I find www.probikekit.co.uk and www.wiggle.co.uk usually give me the best prices on high5. I don't see the rationale for a recovery bar as I can get whatever proper food I like when I get home at the end of a run, with no constraints of bulk, shelf-life, etc
