In short: Misdirections for the second year running....... In full: Pancake Flat (but coastal so will normally be windy) course, but very complicated including two similar laps of the airfield, completed after 3 and 7 miles.
This meant that as a faster runner we were effectively lapping the field between the 7 and 8 mile points.
At this point the runners in 2nd and 3rd went off course altering the final result and individual standings. It's difficult to call how the race might have ended up but one of these two had earlier been taken offcourse by an additional 200m following the lead cyclist while leading early in the race. In short: Nice local rural race, Tough hills though! In full: This year the race hosted the national Inter-Counties champs and so benefitted from a sharper field than normal. Well organised (how many £7 10ks are traffic free with full road closures?) and nice touches such as the blow up doll in Coventry Godiva kit on the roadside with 200m to go! But the course will never be one for fast times.
If I lived locally I would do it again, but wouldn't travel 100 miles for the race unless it hosted another representative match.
In short: Flat race around Willen lake. In full: It's around a lake. This should be enough to tell you it's going to be windy - and that's the thing that costs PBs on this course. Otherwise a well organised club race. Fairly deep prize list (top 10 senior men) ensures a decent field. Date of review: November 25, 2007
