In short: A great day for the family - marvellous race! In full: Loved this race. Had no idea Ilford could be that scenic. Parking literally next to the startline, how much more convenient can it get? Great marshalling, helping us around the course which has a few twisty bits. Course is pancake flat. Good mix of club/non-club runners. The park makes great entertaining for accompanying family members. Even my husband, who isn't that much into running said he may give this one a go next year. And the best thing of all: I won a cash prize for coming first in my age group. Date of review: September 29, 2009

In short: Friendly, but tough little event In full: Scenic and very quiet, rural little country roads. Too bad it's basically uphill all the way after about 3miles. The gradient on the map is deceptive - I found it incredibly tough going. From the course map and peoples' descriptions I would have expected this race to be a lot easier. Still managed a PB on tired legs (Berlin marathon in 3 weeks time), so I'm not complaining. Felt a bit lonely on long stretches of the course - there isn't much in terms of crowd support but then it is a very small and local event, so that was to be expected. The marshals did a sterling job, staying cheerful in bad weather. A big thank you to all of them. Nice touch to get a bottle of "champions ale" rather than a boring old medal or yet another t-shirt. All in all a worthwhile race and lovely, welcoming participants. I was one of the very few non-club runners there but didn't feel like an outsider at all. I got cheers, "well done" and "great" comments at the finish as though I was one of the club mates. Would probably give this another go as a standalone race, not part of a marathon plan.
