In short: River, rain, friends and fun In full: This was a lovely marathon along The Thames in Reading, Berkshire, even though it rained throughout. As a lapped marathon you aren't on your own for too long which makes it very friendly regardless of where you are, and for me that's usually at the back or near enough. There are runners of all abilities, but it wasn't elitist which was great.
The aid station had lots of goodies to keep you going and you went past it twice on each lap, what could be better!
The organisation by Paul Ali and his volunteers was perfect making it a stress free registration and start to the marathon. They were all really encouraging during the marathon and made sure that you were ok.
Would I run it again, for sure. Even in the rain, this was still a really good way to spend an evening!
In short: Hot, hilly with a pub stop on the way! In full: First time running the 54321 and I chose the marathon distance. As a mainly road / hard surface runner I knew it would be hard day out, and wasn't disappointed. The views were beautiful, the runners were friendly especially when the different distances merged and split. The route was well signposted (follow your distance and if unsure ask), though you can also carry a map or download the route to a watch.
Race organisation was excellent, parking was easy, number collection simple. Good number of toilets and able to buy coffee before the start.
Marshalls were very friendly and helped fill bottles and cups to keep us hydrated on a VERY hot day. Lots of aid stations, but most of the earlier ones only had water, so be prepared to carry any drink / food you need. There are also a few pubs on the route, so I did stop for a pint of coke and a packet of crisps! Absolute heaven.
I really enjoyed the day out and will definitely be back again, the value of this marathon in comparison to others is brilliant and I love the medal and t-shirt (you can buy it as an extra and as the race was much cheaper than others I run I did buy it and very glad too!). There was also an ice-cream van and burger van at the end do buy food from without having to walk anywhere. Perfect organisation.
Thanks for a brilliant marathon. Date of review: August 15, 2016
