In short: Underwhelming. In full: If such a term as over-marshalling existed, then this race would define it. Not only that, but the whole atmosphere felt like being watched over by angry P.E. teachers. This was my second time doing it (only because it was a suitable race in the timeframe for my training), and I won't be doing it again. Non-existent goody bag and cheap-looking medal. Lack of a genuine atmosphere. The whole thing felt like a training run. Bit of a bottle neck right at the start but otherwise good for PB potential. If you're training for another event in the near future and you want a flat race for a good PB, then go for this; but don't expect anything else beyond that.
In short: My 5th GSR In full: This was my 5th time at the GSR, a race I keep going back to for sentimental value as it was the first race I've ever done. Every year the traffic is worse and the slower runners who inexplicably sign up to the fastest wave are more in number which makes a PB an impossibility. But the local crowds are fantastic and the whole thing has a nice buzz to it. And yes I'll be doing it again in 2015. Date of review: October 26, 2014
In short: Great race... again! In full: This is my second year doing this race and once again, I was not disappointed. Great organisation, very nice route and (as with last year), great weather. Fantastic race for serious runners (serious PB potential) and for beginners alike.
Will I be doing it again next year? Absolutely. Date of review: October 5, 2014
In short: Excellent race. In full: This was an excellent race, which may well end up being one of my favourite regional 10K races. Excellent PB potential as it is rather flat. Good atmosphere, especially along the seafront, with some lovely scenery as well. Good value for money, with a nice medal and some enjoyable goodies. Although I didn't achieve a PB, this was my first 10K race after a break of nearly a year, and my time exceeded my expectations, so I'm quite happy. I will definitely be doing it again next year. In short: My 2nd GSR. In full: Really enjoyed it. Heavy traffic in and out of Portsmouth but only have myself to blame as I decided to drive instead of taking the train.
The race itself is excellent. Flat course, great PB potential. Managed to take 14 minutes off my time from last year - so I will definitely be doing this a 3rd time next year. Date of review: October 30, 2011
In short: Good race, toilets could have been better. In full: The Good: 1. Helen Mirren's cameo appearance at the START line. 2. The random piece of rubber flapping in the wind outside New Look. Classy! 3. Denture World - someone should turn that into a nationwide chain. 4. The "Keep Calm and Carry on up the Hill" sign at the steep hill. 5. The jelly babies. Except I didn't have any because I'm watching my weight. 6. Enthusiastic support from the locals. 7. Excellent marshals. 8. Nice medal. 9. Bananas (no trip to ASDA for me this week) 10. Pint of cider at the pub
The bad: The lack of a sense of comradery with the other runners. It all felt a bit elitist and exclusive.
The ugly: The toilets. Date of review: September 25, 2011
