In short: Scenic, tough race with some organisation difficulties In full: This race has been harshly-criticised and whilst I concur there were problems, it wasn't all bad.
Good points, the scenery was great, great camaraderie amongst the runners, the course provided a hefty challenge in negotiating the mud, the steep steep climb etc. The marshalls were great, and very friendly.
Bad points (some of these points are quite trivial, but worth mentioning), not enough marshalls, you could've got lost if you didn't have your wits about you, that was quite possibly the quietest loud hailer I've heard in my life, medals handed out at Race HQ rather than at the finish, baggage storage not supervised as far as I could tell, and not sign-posted, finishing straight was down the main road - that is a potential safety hazard despite the relatively low speed of exiting cars as runners will appear form the side of the road. The water station ... well you can't have it like that, that's not good enough.
With some tinkering and some organisational changes, it could be a great little race.
I still enjoyed doing it, for some reason it reminded me of doing the cross-country at school (probably because of the lack of marshalls).
I hope the organisers will see some of these comments and have a little bit of a re-think, because the event does have potential. I think some of the difficulties betrayed a lack of experience in putting on events. Date of review: November 11, 2013
In short: Great crowd support and scenic route makes for a special day In full: Think this course would be too hard for a PB, but otherwise pretty much a must-do for anyone within reasonable travelling distance. Date of review: September 29, 2013
In short: Tough In full: Always nice to have a start and finish at the stadium. Very undulating, with one part of the course verging into XC territory.
Well-organised though, and I have no big criticisms. Although the goody bag was perplexing (I'm happy with just a kit kat and an energy drink) and the finisher's t-shirt a bit ropey (anyone finishing a race that hard deserves a medal!)
But a good workout for me, and I'm glad I did it. Date of review: December 12, 2005
In short: Nice little race In full: Layout of race means that upon exiting the stadium, some congestion is inevitable. Having said that, the field opened out soon enough, with plenty of room to put your foot down.
Have my doubts about the first km marker, but other than that, no complaints.
A really weighty, chunky medal at the end for those of you that like such things. Date of review: October 14, 2005
In short: Very Tough In full: Not so much laps as out-and-back twice.
In between South and Central there was some really soft sand, as well as water hazards that wouldn't look out of place at St Andrews.
Gentle cross-wind on the way out turned into a very stiff headwind on the return, which made pace judgement very difficult indeed. The worst thing about the back portion was that you knew you had to face it again.
A "fun" race which gives you a weekend away and is almost guaranteed to make you fitter. It's very hard work! Date of review: August 18, 2005
In short: The odd niggle aside, more or less the perfect half. In full: I found this a challenging course (lack of training told here, probably) due to the frequency of the hils (appearing just when ou don't want them to!)
Particularly enjoyed - running past the snooker, running into the stadium (that was fun!), the medal, the atmosphere. Didn't enjoy - getting to and from the stadium, the randomly-placed mile markers. Date of review: May 2, 2005
In short: Potential to be a Fantastic Fun Event In full: I've rated this race low for organisation and value, but that's only because it must've been hard to organise first time round. With the course radically altered at teh last minute due to problems on the beach, it meant that value-for-money was poor as it was a lot shorter.
However, it would be harsh to say "don't do this race" on that basis, as it was a logistical challnge.
Hopefully next year, if they run it, it will be better, and the problems ironed out.
They also need to make teh obstacles a little more stable, it was a bit hairy going over one in particular!
But all-in-all, a great laugh! Date of review: April 5, 2005
