2012 BUPA Great South Run
 | | Overall score | | 80% | | Would you do it again? | | Yes | | | | Details: | | Scenery | | 80% | | PB potential | | 100% | | Atmosphere | | 80% | | Organisation | | 80% | | Value | | 40% | | Beginner-friendliness | | 80% |
In short: Another excellent GSR In full: I have run this race for many years and depending on weather always enjoy it and I usually get a good time off the back of a couple of halves completed in September. Traffic is always a problem as there are only two main roads one can use and the race literature clearly states this is a problem and not only on race day. I thought there were less cars on Southsea Common this year so perhaps more people parked in the city car parks - but we all leave using the same road eventually!
Weather could have been better but at least we were spared the awful westerly wind and rain that can ruin the last two miles and PBs.
I think BUPA events are very well organised when you consider the number of runners involved - but their races are some of the dearest to enter - £40+ for 2013 - but I have already entered so I will be back. Date of review: October 29, 2012

In short: Excellent traffic free varied terrain half In full: Well organised, friendly, scenic, a couple of slight uphills and some bridges and mostly no road surfaces. Quite a good "goody bag". Made a break from all those miles on the road. Blessed by dry conditions. Well done Purple Patch and all the marshalls - very good event. Date of review: March 26, 2012

In short: Excellent organisation and challenging scenic course In full: Another great effort from TWH - well done; shame about goody bag problem - but I'm sure they have learnt from it. Scenic Challenging course with quite a few crowd hotspots which help. Well marshalled - including the Portaloo area. One of the best half marathons. Well done everyone involved. In short: Excellent city half In full: Very well organized half - one of the best and I have run over 80 half marathons. Not the most scenic route but flat and good local support. Due to it's location, plenty of car parks so no queues. Very good doody bag, medal tech-t shirt, banana drink - very good value for entry fee. Well done Peterborough - please don't change too much! I will return. Date of review: October 10, 2011

In short: Well organised scenic marathon In full: Growing marathon which is not flat. This year it was hot but plenty of water and Powerade available. Some nice scenery but also road traffic as roads are not closed but well marshalled. Encouraging locals and marshall help you along. Enthusiatic crowd at finish . Good quality medal and tech. T-shirt. There is also popular team 5 stage relay race run at the same time - if like me you have to drop out, drop out at a relay point and get a quick transfer back to the start/finish area. I was DNF but my wife got a PB - c'est la vie!! Date of review: October 2, 2011

In short: Enjoyable, Challenging traffic free half marathon. In full: Have run this several times over the years. Not the easiest of courses (and usually warm/hot weather)but good support in some areas and the marshalls and large number of runners keep you going. Don't like the 1pm start - has always been 1pm - perhaps organisers could tell us why 1pm not 10am. Date of review: September 26, 2011

In short: Excellent city half marathon In full: I have run this half for several years and the improvements from last year now makes this a very good city half. The "fiddly bits" around Cumberland Basin have gone and the finish area is much better organised. Well done Bristol (at last) see you next year. One small gripe - 2nd wave could have started after 20 minutes rather than 30. Date of review: September 11, 2011
