Hi Everyone, Can I join in please? I have to confess to not really being a beginner but I haven't run in over a year now and so it feels as if I am!
I have the beginners schedule to hand and am ready to go for week 1 starting tomorrow so wish me luck.....
A bit about me, I'm (just) the wrong side of 50, living in Yorkshire and work full time in a full-on job. Moved here last year after untangling my personal life and have really struggled to get back into running/fitness. Net result is that I have about 1and1/2 stone to shift and a lot of fitness to get back. I've never been a fantastic runner, only taking it up when I turned 40, but I have done quite a lot of races including 4 London Marathons (PB 4:55 so not fast!) Right now though, I'm not sure I could run a bath let alone 26 miles!!
I really really want to do one more London and am hoping that I will get a charity place via Breast Cancer Care. I would like to raise a substantial amount of money for them, hence the reason for me wanting to get fit and back into my running well ahead of starting a training programme.
So, today I am doing family things and putting off the start of my programme - yes, I could start today, but in my head it's going to be tomorrow. 1 minute run, 90 secs walk......I will report back |

Hello hello!! Lots for me to read back on but WELL DONE Redhead on an amazing experience. GOOD LUCK Birdy for this weekend - You'll be just fine and I hope the weather is kind to you. SCharm - you must be sooo pleased that you're tapering now - enjoy the rest before the big challenge.
Hi to everyone else I hope you're all returning back to normal....to be honest, apart from my toes (I know, we've *done* toes) I recovered really well and by wearing some slightly different trainers, was able to go out for a gentle 30 minute plod on the Thursday after FLM. I've since done a 45 mins and a couple of stints on the exercise bike but am planning a steady 60 mins on Sunday....I agree that you just have to listen to your body and in other years, it's taken me ages to get going again. I'm also carrying my medal around with me - it's been lovely as I do a fair bit of business networking and so each different meeting I've been to since FLM, I've actually had applause and lots of congrats (plus much collecting of sponsorship!) I've been really touched by everyone's interest and have at least 2 more willing victims for next year!
Fran - I've booked a few more races but I like the sound of the Swansea 10K and am definitely up for Cardiff half in October. I'm doing a 10k in Aberdare on July 5th which is supposed to be flat and fast (unlike me!) but not sure how far that is for you to travel?
The wetsuit talk has made me laugh! I flirted with the idea of a triathlon last year and even hired a wetsuit as the one I was doing was supposed to be an open water swim.....what a faff about to get in and out of it? Blimmin' race would have been over by the time I came out of transition - as it happened, the event clashed with my house move weekend so a lucky escape for me but good luck to those brave enough to go for it!
Relaxed - I did the very first Manchester great run thingy when I lived 'Oop North and I seem to remember that the finish was as the top of the car park ramp inside GMEX - there was chaos as people tried to sprint uphill to the line - collapsing all over the show.... I've run it a few time since then and thankfully it's changed - I love it and wish I was doing it - you'll be fine.

Morning from me too - a lovley drizzly grey day in Wales - why couldn't it have been like this on Sunday eh?? Fran - I think the toenail thing is catching! I too had no sleep last night - although I lost a toe nail during the race, it seems like the rest of them are going black in sympathy - left foot is swollen to twice the size and is very 'hot' and angry.... I also have NEVER had problems like this in training (or the other 3 FLM's ) It must be the trainers but I've worn New Balance for years....hmmmm I've entered a 10k in July in Aberdare and I'm havering between the Cardiff or Bristol half mara which are both stupidly on the same day in September. I will pop a few more in the diary as I really want to keep my marathon fitness (such as it is!) Good luck for the tandem race Redhead - rather you then me! |

My photos are still uploading but the finishers one has me looking far too relaxed compared to how I really felt - or perhaps it was just the relief of finishing! Wotsit - I am going to stick with the coaching - the programme and the coach was great and I can't blame him for my performance on the day. In fact, talking to him yesterday - he has an interesting theory about some people losing more sodium than others on hot days - I am always caked in salt after a long run and I seem to remember you saying something similar? I'll let you know what his research turns up...........or am I just looking for excuses?? |

My post from earlier evaporated just as I pressed submit and I lost internet connection - obviously sponsored by Virgin - hmmph! Anyway - I just wanted to say a MASSIVE well done Wotsit on a fantastic pb - those are impressive splits and it was such an evil day weather wise. You should be really proud of all the hard work you put in but I can't believe you're already planning your next one! Well done to everyone else on this thread too - some great experiences and lots of lovely medals - my own performance was less than dazzling but I can't be too disappointed - it was my race and I ran it as best as I could at the time. My feet and my head were the problem - the legs were just fine (unlike today - owww) Of course, I haven't bothered to enter again for next year - no - definitely not - not me...... |
