I wouldn’t say I’d had ideal preparation, what with getting so smashed on Thursday night (a whole different story!) I got 4 hours sleep and couldn't even look at a computer screen on Friday without wanting to vomit. That normally wouldn't be a problem for a Sunday race, but because I needed a full night's sleep on Saturday, I was on baby duty on Friday so followed the session up with 3 hours of broken sleep and then a kiddies 3rd birthday party on Saturday. I normally rise with a spring in my step on race day, but it was all I could do to drag myself out of bed!
I ran it with my mate who I was 1-1 with, and as expected, the first 4 miles were horrific. At one point he turned to me and burst out laughing as I was just dripping in sweat as the lethargy left my system. We set into a steady 7.35 pace, and pretty much jogged it round to mile 8. I didn't feel anything like comfortable, but was really enjoying having someone to chat to and take my mind off of it.
There's a bit of a hill at 8.5 through to 9 and that seemed to wake me from my slumber and suddenly something just clicked. I started to pull away from my mate towards the top and having done this one before, I knew it was flat / mildly downhill for the last 4, so thought what the heck and just went for it. Really enjoyed the last four as I picked people off one by one, and went through the gears to finish with a 7.20, 7.14, 7.04, 6.52 and then 6.10 for the last bit. Managed to beat my mate by a full 1.20 through the last 4M alone, so was chuffed to bits with it as always good to finish strong.
Given I've barely been averaging 20M per week for the past 13 weeks, I'm extremely happy with where I'm at. Bizarrely enough, I’m only a couple of minutes off of my HM PB despite being about half a stone too heavy, having done no speedwork for months so am pretty sure I can have a good go at that in the new year.
I’m away in Budapest from tomorrow, so probably won’t be able to check in until I’m back so enjoy Oxford all those who happen to be in the vicinity!
Just quickly popping in as I'm in charge of the 2 nippers this afternoon in return for running this morning. Really surprised myself with 1.37.15 and 4 quick miles to finish. That's 4 mins off my HM time in 3 weeks so definitely going in the right direction. Will check in properly tomorrow, hope everyone else had good races too (unfortunately didn't bump into Ant which was a shame)
Nice session KFC – I haven’t done anything at 5k pace for months, let alone faster than!
Sounds like a masochistic hill session DD, the type that definitely improve you
Ant – nice final run through. Does that mean you’re going to target sub 1.30? I did something similar last night but at 7.35 pace, so am going to target a) beat mate, b) sub-1.40 or c) beat my course best which is 1.38. I’ll be happiest with A, but am hoping it won’t take C to get that result or I might be in trouble!
IJ – cracking set of sessions there, sounds like you’re on fire
Gaz – nice long run there and as you say, it is all in the mind. Can’t help on the TM front I’m afraid, as try and avoid them at all costs
Spoons – you must be able to drop a medicine ball on your stomach boxing style with the work you’re doing!
I’m off out tonight. Been invited to an awards do where I don’t know a single person and there’s a free bar. Experience would show that is a very, very dangerous combination…
Barry / Pink - really sorry to hear the bad news and puts everything else into perspective. Condolences to you both and your daughters.
Shildon - well done on your 1st place, that's a brilliant result as us blokes never get any bling!
Daren / Minni - great work knocking 20 milers out
I'm with Carrot on the beetroot juice. I don't care what benefits it brings, I think I'd vomit the moment it hit the back of my throat.
DD - nice training and I hope the docs find out what the problem is.
I had quite a good week last week. Managed 38M which is my biggest mileage since March as just haven't had the time to do it. I should be tapering for HM on Sunday, but thinking more long-term really to try and get back into it. Unsure about whether to commit to a spring marathon, mainly due to home life with 3 month old and Dad unwell, but will make a decision soon.
Did a 10K training run on Sunday at 7.24 pace, followed with a HM training run on Sunday at 8.30 pace, and then did a 5M shuffle this morning. Was peeing it down with rain but I love running when it's like that. Have a slight ache in my calf, but hoping I'll be in reasonable condition for Sunday.
