This is taken from my husband's facebook page on the matter: Not all barristers are rich and there is a big gap between those that earn loads and those that don't. We are not rich by any means. Cut the fees to overpaid QCs but not to magistrate court criminal defence hacks.
1. When I did publicly-funded criminal defence advocacy the rate was about £65/case, which would be a typical day's wages. Like news-reading it wasn't just standing and up and speaking - you'd have to read a bundle of papers the night before, and do things like deal with distressed families and complete a written report afterwards. If you mucked up the consequences could be very grave. Then I had to pay £500/month for chambers rent; thence 10% commission to the clerks on all income received. YOU do the maths - could you live on what was left?2. Far from all barristers being wealthy hundreds go bankrupt each year - mostly criminal defence hacks.3. There has been no remuneration increase this century for publicly-funded defence advocacy in the criminal courts. None - not even in line with inflation, so it has actually significantly decreased. And prosecution rates have only marginally increased, largely to satiate Daily Mail readers and the like.4. This year public-service workers complained their their pay rises didn't match the realities of inflation etc, and some took industrial action. Fair enough. But no-one said two groups of workers actually had their remuneration lowered - prisoners who do paid work in jail and publicly-funded lawyers.5. Legal aid (as it was called) actually provided good value and a vital safety check to the taxpayer as for instance compensation to personal injury victims was usually paid by insurance companies; and Judicial Review proceedings ensured government departments operated within the law. From all barristers everywhere - WE ARE ON YOUR SIDE. Please support us.
Last time I looked apples were not very streamlined so good look and respect for that. My short run/walk sessions have obviously worked cos I managed a slow 5k run on Sunday and just done a nearly 3 mile tempo run so I'm ready for parkrun on saturday
And I've found my lost avatars so life is good. Keep cracking the whip kaz!
