as a very fast runner said to me (and i'm a tortoise not a hare!)
"it's about how long you've been running and how much you much you have trained ..i'm just futher down the road than you..."
a lot futher down the road as it happens! but i never forgot these words, the more i run the more it seems appropriate.
the ones cruising past you have just been at it longer than you...yes squats etc to strengthen the muscles are good..stronger muscles, faster runner and all that, but the important thing is that you run because you enjoy it, there is always going to be people faster than you, and me... enjoy your pace, enjoy your run, follow the schedules to improve speed....but above all , just enjoy it because you are fortunate enough to be able to run! good luck
could it be connected to brittle bone syndrome (you know, when a woman gets over 40 her bone density becomes thinner)? i'm pretty light in build, my mum has arthritus, and i used to suffer arthrytic type pains in my knee. i take calcium supplements (to build up the bones) and omega3 for lubrification of joints (and other beneftits!). after 40 they say the body wears down much quicker, i've found that steady training has built up my strength in my knee and i haven't had any problems for over a year.
i'm obviously prone to arthritus because it's just begun in my fingers, bit depressing, but hey, at least it's not my knee!
all articles i've read say exercise far outways couch potatoes, mentally and physically, (but you know that!) so i wouldn't give up! good luck
can anyone give me advice on how to adapt my running for a hot season? i live in italy and the temp is a little under 40 degrees...should i concentrate on shorter faster sessions or stick to my usual mix of distance, tempo, repetitions? if you live in a hot climate do you change your running patterns to suit the climate? it's all a bit hot and swetty...
