Thanks Grendel and B2B for your support and kind words. It is just a bit frustrating when I think back to what I was doing 6 months ago. It is amazing how quickly you lose a fitness that came from years of hard work.

Just back from my first run for six months. 2 miles on a run walk strategy. Felt awkward, as if I had never run before. Also it was very hard work, my heart rate was so high, compared to what it would have been running at such a slow pace. Hopefully I will get some fitness back soon

Hi Grendel3, thanks for your welcome and advice. I will have to read back a bit and find out what you mean. There is a lot of material to catch up on in the thread, so it might take me some time to find it.

Thanks Jeepers, I have put my information on there, and will start slowly as you suggest. My doctor has told me that I will know when I feel ready to run, and that I should listen to my body. I am very cautious about starting too quickly, and setting myself back again.

Hi I am new to this thread, so I hope that you do not mind me joining in. I have posted this elsewhere on the site, but will put it here as well so you know something about my running history, and current position. I am at the point of starting back again soon after a long period off due to illness. It is six months since I last ran. Last October I had a severe allergic reaction to some anti-biotics. In 48 hours I went from being able to run 10 miles without any trouble, to taking 15 minutes to get my breath back from walking up one flight of stairs in our house. Then I got Bells Palsy just as I was starting to recover from the effect of the antibiotics. I am at last at a stage when I think I could manage a run. So, after so long off, do I start up again as a complete novice? Bearing in mind that for the last 12 years, before this setback, I have run at least 5 days every week with an average mileage of 35-35 miles a week, rising to 50 when training for a marathon. Any advice from anyone who has started again after a prolonged period away due to illness would be appreciated. |
