Would there by any chance of a 8.30 min/mile pace group? I'm pretty sure I could do the 9 min mile group (marathon PB 3.53 in 2003) but don't think I'm going to be able to keep pace with the 8 min group - not after half way at least!

What say you RW?

Brief running history:

After a long night in the pub in 1998 I said anyone could run a marathon with proper training. My mates entered me into the following year’s marathon and I dismally failed to make the starting line. It took me three years – and a proper training schedule starting in August 2001 – to start and finish the London Marathon in 2002 (4.26.00). Having never run ‘properly’ before, I was hooked. Did Amsterdam that year in 3.53.28 and London in 2003 in 4.10.13. By then I’d joined the Bedford Harriers and had become ‘a runner’.

Reason why we should train you:

Since the summer of 2005 I have only completed three races, my running club renewal form for 2006 still lies forlornly on my desk and, perhaps most galling, my four brothers have all caught the running bug and are posting times over shorter and longer distances that I can only dream about! There must be loads of people who catch the running bug, get to a certain level of performance and then life (in my case self-employment and fatherhood) seems to get in the way and the running shoes get further and further towards the back of the shoe cupboard. My marathon place is thanks to the National Society for Epilepsy, inspired to run again by the circumstances of my good friends Karl and Clair Donnan (see the blog on www.archiesmountain.com) so this time there can be no excuses. No talking myself out of training runs. No ‘do it tomorrow’ attitude.

Predicted marathon time.

PB please (3.53.27 or less!)

Hi ATM

We're staying here - www.thebridgehotel.nl - ran the full marathon in 2002 (still my PB) and doing the half this time as illness and new Dadness has meant that running was parked from October 2005 to June this year!

Morning All,

Just waiting for a few of last nights beers to clear the system and will be off for a 6-8 mile slow run later today (last week of the pre-marathon schedule marathon schedule!).

I'm training to run a 4.30 marathon (10 minute mile pace) which is 40 minutes off a PB - and as FAB said earlier, it is great to take a nice slow pace and finish a long distance feeling like you could run it all over again.

The past two autumns have been inactive for me following injuries - occurring after my PBs and race times came tumbling down in spring and summer. So definitely a word of warning about over-training from my own experiences.

I've also discovered FitStop MK and their metabolic assessment - a very interesting test and assessment on their treadmill and well worth forking out for if you're looking to discover a bit more personal information about your own body's habits and how it works in running; e.g. I now know that at 122bpm - which is a very slow pace - my body is burning fat with 100% efficiency so as I'd like to shed a stone, then it's the very slow runs that will do it!
