Thanks RP, sorry to hear you had abdo pain and had to DNF. Good to hear you're back to full fitness. I'm sorry we didn't meet up other than the brief chat in Almere. I had my son to look after and I didn't want to gatecrash the GB party. Hopefully I'll be at the GB party in 2015.
KateF the accommodation was really easy to organise. I used www.hotels.nl which allow you to book without deposit and cancel up to 24hrs before. I stayed at Hotel Finn, right in the pedestrianised center 5 mins walk from registration/start/finish etc.
Travel as you say is easy, rail station 5 mins walk in the other direction. Trains to Schipol about every 10-15 mins.
If I don't get into Weymouth next year I'd think really hard about going back and doing it again. They run about 8 events over the weekend, the long course being the Dutch championships so there's quite a lot happening on Fri/Sat and Sun. Also as the event is on the Sat I was able to spend Sun wandering around Amsterdam before flying home.
Out on the run. 6 loops of 7km. Helpfully the organisers had given us 6 hair bands to use to tick off the loops. I really enjoyed pinging them at supporters at the end of each lap. By now the sun had come out and I suddenly and unexpectedlt found my running legs. I met Running Postie and had a few words, I ran past Meldy who was out in support. Due to GI issues I decided to stick to flat coke and water when thirsty. The support was great!
Crossed the finish line in 12:04:25 having done a 3:58:30 run.
The support at the end is great, food, drink etc.
Then off to find my son who had missed the whole thing!
Two loop course not involving an Australian exit. I was standing waiting to go in when flyaway introduced herself (I was wearing my Pirate swim cap). Soon told to put my official swimcap on and off we went. Much better swim than last year mainly due to the fact I could see where we were supposed to go. No biff to speak of. I tried to relax and get on with it. Out of the water in 1:15.
Usual faffing, thankfully this year the timings included T1 and T2 so I don't know how slow I really was.
Two 90km loops, closed roads, a little bit of Dutch cycle paths which were slightly narrow but overall superb surfaces. Settled into my usual slowish cycle and after 20km hit the dyke out to Lelystad. 30km into the prevailing wind and I was being overtaken by the athletes doing the Half distance (they started an hour later). Lots of draughting going on by the half guys, whole peletons flashing by! Anyway tried not to get too annoyed and carried on with the fueling thing. After the first loop there is a small 'out and back' to the edge of Almere where the supporters gathered. Nice to get some cheering! Second loop was pretty lonely, no draughting halvers and I wasn't catching or being caught. Time to play mind games/sing and tick off the kilometers. At 150km I had GI issues due to the number of gels I had consumed and had to stop for what Australians call a 'chunder'. Felt much better and made it into T2 Bike 6:35.
