I second the snow ability. I walked out with a friend. He wore Meindl Lhotse walking boots (pretty hardcore) and wore the Speedcross 2's. Mine had more grip in the snow than his! Had mine for 4+ months and have run 300+ miles without any fuss at all.
I guess it depends on whether you intend to achieve something in the marathon or not. You could use it as part of your ultra training and sacrifice the best time possible or as Kryten says focus on the marathon and use it as a springboard for your ultra training.
I wonder if the guys at RW magazine will read some of these comments and respond?
Don't be silly, they've got their heads up their own arses!
TH6 and Blimpy, I think you are bang on the money. I have worked for a couple of magazines over the years and in general I never saw any particular talent or concern for the end user beyond the fluffy desire to be working for a magazine. They tended to be a rather dull bunch as are many creatives/artists. That said, if we keep writing these comments one of them might grow a pair and speak to us Not
I have to agree with the majority of comments on here and I'm a newbie of about 8 months. Without wanting to sound holier than thou, I can understand that newbies would buy RW at first. I did myself twice.
But if you care about the fact that running is a potentially damaging activity if not approached in the right way, wouldn't you look on the net for advice and form a suitable viewpoint from the wealth of info available rather than relying on a few mag articles each month? There is so much info out there that no magazine can offer close to this in 100 years.
Obviously this depends on how far you wish to learn about what you are doing and based on the fact many choose to run for fun or fitness then yes RW is pointless. However their forums are tip top, I think we all agree on that? But would we use them if they weren't free?
