Hi guys! Excellent, excellent running from everyone, what a day it was!
Amazing PBs from Free, Carrot, 2Old and Nell. You are all sooo speedy! It was great to catch up with some of you at the green start and others at Chandos and it was great to at last meet 2Old and Nell.
My aim was to have a good steady training run and aim for around 3.33-3.35 to make sure that I can get straight back into comrades training. I thought it was going to be great to do it for once without the pressure and enjoy the experience but I must admit that I found having to hold back so much rather frustrating and don't think I would want to do this again in such a big race.
I did VLM 2 years ago but I must say I found it a lot busier this year- not sure if it's just because I was more aware of what was going on around while going at a more relaxed pace or maybe it's all those ultras and off road maras I've done in the last few months... but I must say I've definitely decided lower key events are the way to go for me in the future. The noise was overwhelming at times and it felt like a bit of a circus to be perfectly honest.
I managed to stick to around my target pace (of just over 8mm) for the majority of it until the last 4 miles where I just couldn't help myself and let go a bit. As a result the stats show that in the last 7km I passed 791 runners and only 7 passed me... lol. This would never happen under normal circumstances! Finished in comfortable 3.31.30.
The legs feel back to normal today and managed 10m into work this morning with no issues so I guess sticking to the plan has paid off.
Pembrokeshire 35m ultra this Saturday and almost time for comrades taper after that...
I'm currently waiting for Minni to roll into Kings Cross so that I can stop pretending I'm doing any work and go pick her up.
Plan for Sunday for me is steady 3.33-3.35 and it'd better feel easy or I will be worried! It's nice to go into this with no pressure for once... and typically the weather looks perfect for racing the ONE year I'd rather it was hot...lol!
Hope to see you all at the green start (I think that's where I'm going....)
2Old- awesome HM from you and very nice consistent pacing! Good work on parkrun pacing as well, I bet all those poor sods hanging on for dear life appreciated you happily jogging along next to them...
DD- good effort, must be a relief to have a bit of a change of scenery!
Barry- very well done in those conditions... I think I would give up!
Free- you are flying indeed! Great job and very impressive MP!
O4S- nice mileage... superwoman.
Chick- I don't dare ask why you're practicing Israeli martial art... . And always dedicated to the cause!
Carrot- I love how you sneak in under 20min without a garmin... sigh... just a bit jealous!
What a day it was yesterday... running against the elements is what I call it. Had to get 20m done... felt like crying 15m into it. Blowing gales and rain coming from all sides. But then at least wasn't racing like some so shouldn't be complaining. Nice end to a 70m week.
It's Battersea 10k this Saturday (not sure why I'm doing this to myself) and Exmoor mara next weekend (more like it).
Free- yes I will definitely see you at the green start
O4S- we must be talking about different hills in Dorset... mine were steep! I've only done one ultra (35m in Northumberland) but 27m in Dorset took me the same time on feet... So I consider it to be ultra as well! I've done lots of back to backs running long on Saturday and Sunday.
2Old- I won't be racing VLM but probably won't be allowed to just happily jog along either... I think I will aim for something like 3.35 but to be confirmed. My training really hasn't been that different from mara training with more long runs and back to backs and no MP sections in long runs. Oh and I've been doing quite a lot of s&c in the gym. I haven't noticed any major differences but what it firmly confirmed in my mind is that I feel best and improve most on high mileage. I'm done attempting the 'quality over quantity' approach, it doesn't suit me. I think I'm a lot like Chick in this respect.
Barry- exciting stuff with the tri coming up!
Chick- I think Sayonaras are a bit like Hitogamis? I love my hitogamis
10m steady done this morning. Gym and intervals planned for tomorrow.
