When I first started running, I didn't follow a programme and I was so over doing it. When it came to my first marathon in 2008, I found a good structured programme to follow. I felt the difference straight away. My training was far better quality when I followed the pragramme as to when I was going it alone. When I was doing it alone, I was just burning myself out. I followed the programme to make sure that I was doing enough to get round but not to the point that I was over doing it. I reccomend you follow a training programme so that you get good quality and consistancey in your running. I also reccomend that you join a running club. They can give you support and advice about your running. When I joined my club two years ago, it was the best thing I ever did. They do different things every week, so that you don't get bored and they can teach you about doing some core stability and cross training to achieve an all round fitness.
