Never used Gel's before, maybe I should give it a go. Don't plan to go any further than marathon (I think), so don't need to become a fat burning machine. Any recommendation for which gels to use or is it just a personal preference. I only used water when I did a marathon a few years ago but I did suffer in the last few miles so it's best I try something. Anyway marathon is a year away yet just trying to formulate a plan.
I'll google marathon talk and Tom Williams and give them a listen.
literatin - I was under the impression you could only store around 20 miles worth of glycogen so the transfer of energy source from glycogen to fat was almost guaranteed and the wall was basically if the pace you are running is beyond the pace you're body can process the fat making the pace no longer sustainable. I'd like to go for a sub 3 marathon when I make my attempt so the 7.40 I can do needs to be brought down to 6.50.....just wanted to know how to best train my body for the switch over of energy source......also I'm not sure if my understanding is even right TBH so if I'm off the mark anyone who knows how it works feel free to correct me.
hi all, a question for the people who understand the science behind running a bit more than me.
I'm wanting to do a marathon next spring so have been thinking about how I will train for it...I was also thinking about hitting the wall which gave me the idea of doing a little experiment. I carb depleted for a couple days and then went out for a 15 miler this morning to see what sort of pace I could run when only running off fat not glycogen stores like normal. My normal pace has been about 7.15, my pace for today's run was 7.42.
I take it that 7.40 is the pace my body can manage to convert fat to energy, if i hit the wall I wouldn't stand a chance of going any faster than this. What does everyone think the best way of increasing the rate my body can burn the fat late in a race? Is running in a carb depleted state regularly a good idea or will this do more harm than good.
Iiteratin -yep im a sutton harrier, not sure on the summer league race due to work commitments so thought a nice hard session about 10 days from race might have to do instead.....just read jonas' session which sounds interesting although 10 k of speed would be more than i'm used to. I did the last summer league about 3 weeks ago but think I've moved on a bit since then.
