I have used a 2 week taper for my marathons, and not had any issues with it- also I have not done such high mileage as some of the others. I think the most important thing is that you actually do cut back, and listen to your programme and resist the 'taper madness'. a 3 week one is possibly better for newer runners too?
Pipski, I had plantar fasciitis, and felt it tear the last long run a week before the Cologne Marathon. I couldnt walk that day, but a combination of ice, painkillers (lots) and a steroid injection (waste of time) meant I went out to germany. I ended up running, and finishing but it was not a pleasant experience. An MRI confirmed a partial tear, and I have only run twice since October 13th. My foot is still generally uncomfortable and a bit tight.
Jen- I would love a wet 9 miles!! and some granola too
